The AUC Middle East Documentary Festival will run March 18-26, 2011 on both AUC's downtown and New Cairo campuses.
While we have particular interest in documentaries about Egypt for this year's festival, we seek submissions from across the region.
EGYPT RISING
Egypt Rising, the thematic focus for this year's festival, aims to confront the way the pharaonic past typically eclipses contemporary Egypt as well as to challenge the equally misguided claims that Egypt is culturally and socially 'backwards'. Rather than an historical outlook, we are interested in the dawning horizon and what the future will bring to Egypt. While social paradigms are changing, the programmers of the festival recognize that other efforts are working to strengthen the status quo. We seek documentaries that address this dynamic by focusing on issues of gender and sexuality, urbanization and migration, local and national politics, religious movements, labor rights, and social justice.
FOCUS ON THE MIDDLE EAST
In addition to the Egypt Rising program, the festival also solicits documentaries from elsewhere in the region. We are also interested in documentaries that focus on the Middle East in non-conventional locations, perhaps among diasporic or religious communities residing elsewhere. We will consider any film informed by the documentary tradition, but encourage experimental work.
All accepted submissions will be considered for the Jury and Audience Awards.
Submissions will be accepted until December 1, 2010.
