Cordite Books Fiction Prize | $1,000 top prize | Africa-wide

Cordite Books, an imprint of Lagos, Nigeria based Parrésia Publishers Ltd, is calling on African writers of quality Crime Fiction to submit manuscripts. The winning manuscript will be published by Cordite Books and will receive a US$1,000 prize. Edited by award winning author, Helon Habila, Cordite intends to tap into a growing market for spy and crime fiction in Africa.

Submissions are welcome from published or unpublished authors; submission must be in the crime fiction genre; by an African author; set at least partly in Africa and be between sixty to eighty thousand words in length. Winners will be selected by the Editor. In addition to a publishing contract, the winning manuscript will get a cash prize of $1,000 [covering an advance on royalties]. Two runners-up will get cash prizes.

Submissions are open from August 7th, 2013 and will close on November 30th, 2013. The winning manuscript will be published mid 2014 and will be available all across Africa. Submissions should be uploaded using the submissions manager on the Cordite Books website only. Please read the Submissions Guidelines.

Parrésia’s Managing Editor, Azafi Omoluabi, said, “Cordite is meant to bring an African sensibility to the crime and spy fiction genre made famous by such writers as Ian Fleming, Arthur Conan Doyle, Le Carre, Agatha Christie, James Hadley Chase and Chesterton. Readers want their own local heroes, their own James Bonds and Sherlock Holmes, and why not, since espionage and crime happen in Africa just as anywhere else?”

PRIZES:
  • 1st Prize: Publishing deal with Cordite Books. US$ 1000 continental advance on royalties.
  • 2nd Prize: US$250
  • 3rd Prize: US$200
CRITERIA:
  • African is defined as a citizen of the 53 countries in the continent of Africa and adjoining island, including descendants of such citizens who hold valid African passports.
  • Authors must be resident in an African country and be ready to schedule readings across the continent if successful.
  • Electronic copies of manuscripts are to be formatted as set out below and uploaded in the adjacent form
    • Times New Roman, 13 points, Double spacing.
    • Microsoft Office Word and compatible formats [e.g. Open Office]
    • Documents should be named “Cordite Submission – Authors Name – Manuscript Title” eg “Cordite Submission – Ian Fleming – Octopussy.doc”. Synopsis documents should be named in the format “Cordite Synopsis – Authors Name – Manuscript Title”.
  • Detailed contact details including previous publication and experience should form the first page of the manuscript uploaded.
  • A detailed Synopsis of the manuscript, under 750 words, should be attached at the time of submissions.

2013 NUHA Foundation Writing Competition | £150 top prize | worldwide

Whether you're from Mauritius, Mexico or Malaysia, we would like to hear what YOU have to say about 'education'. The competition has been established as an international platform to debate issues of education and development.

Absolutely anyone can participate, and three prizes are on offer:
  • Young Writers Prize, for those born between 1999 and 2003: £50
  • Youth Prize, for those born between 1995 and 1998: £100
  • Adult Prize, for those born before 1995: £150
It doesn't matter whether English is the authors' first, second, third or fourth language: articles are judged first and foremost on the quality of their argument and the originality of their ideas. To achieve this, the authors have to respond to one of the set statements within a 500 to 1,500 word-limit, by 1 November 2013.

Call for submissions | Black Communion Poetry Anthology | ArtBeat Afrika

ArtBeat Afrika, a contemporary Africa poetry society calls for submissions from published and unpublished Africa Poets at home and Diaspora.

This anthology, titled: ‘BLACK COMMUNION’ is aimed at showcasing to Africa and the world the work and talents of ‘the new Africa poet’.

ELIGIBILITY:

You MUST be an Africa or from an Africa origin to contribute to this anthology.

RULES:
  • All poems must be in English. English poems with few tribal expressions and imageries are also allowed, provided they are accompanied with proper English translations.
  • Collaborations between two or more poets are ALLOWED. Note that a part of this anthology will be dedicated to collaborations among Africa Poets.
  • A poet is not allowed to submit more than 7 poems.
  • Both short and lengthy poems are welcomed.
  • Previously published works are allowed provided they are published in the last two (2) years.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
  • Submission should be sent in either the e-mail body or as an attachment.
  • Along with the poem(s), the following should also be sent: Name, Pen Name (If available), Nationality, email address and a short biography.
  • All submission should be address to artbeatpoets@gmail.com.
  • The deadline for all submission is the 30th of September, 2013.

100TPC - Abuja Celebrates Global Poetry Reading and Performances | Nigeria

We are pleased to announce that the 100thousand Poets for Change, Abuja-Nigeria will be hosting poets and lovers of the arts from all over the FCT and beyond to a day of poetry reading, miming, potpourri of performances, live theater, comedy, dances, dance drama, and lots. It's an annual event focused at the effective deployment of poetry and the arts for peace and sustainability in our world.

100TPC Abuja will be joining the global community in what has been tagged the biggest poetry reading in history. Currently, over 500 events have been confirmed in 100 countries. Still counting.

Call for submissions | The Nigerian Writers Series

The Association of Nigerian Authors hereby calls for submissions for its new publishing intervention, the Nigerian Writers Series. It would be recalled that the Association received a grant of N10,0000,000 from the Chief Servant of Niger State, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, for the purpose.

The Nigerian Writers Series will be modelled as a traditional-style publishing house with a website providing information on the Series, and with a mandate to support the next generation of new writings by new writers of Nigerian origin.
