ABOUT THE JUDGES
Finuala Dowling is a prize-winning poet and novelist. She has read her poetry at South Africa’s major literary festivals and at the Aldeburgh festival in the UK. In 2009 she opened for Sharon Olds at Snape Maltings. Dowling’s poetry collections include I Flying (winner of the Ingrid Jonker prize), Doo-Wop Girls of the Universe, and the acclaimed Notes from the dementia ward. She has published two novels – What Poets Need and Flyleaf. Her third novel will be published by Kwela in 2011. Finuala teaches poetry and writes textbooks for a living.
Beverly Rycroft has written articles for both local and international magazines and in 2000 was joint winner of the Femina/Sensa Features competition. Her poems have appeared in Carapace, New Coin, Scrutiny2 and New Contrast. Her first poetry collection, Missing, published by Modjaji Books in 2010, has met with widespread acclaim.
RULES
General: Entry implies acceptance of all rules, and failure to comply with the rules will result in disqualification. The judge’s decision is final and no individual correspondence will be entered into. Poets featured in Difficult to Explain may not enter.
Poems: Poems must be in English, must each be no longer than 45 lines, must fit on one page of A4, must be the original work of the entrant and must not have been previously broadcast or published (in print or online). Each poem must be typed on one side of A4 white paper showing title & poem only. Do not show author’s name or any other identifying marks on submitted poems. Include a separate page showing Name, Address, Phone, E-Mail, Titles and Number of Poems @ R50 each. Do not use staples. No limit on number of poems submitted, but each poem must be accompanied by R50 entry fee. No alterations accepted after submission. No handwritten submissions. Entries are not returned.
Entries must be submitted at Folio Books, 207 Main Road, Newlands 7700.
Fees: All entries must be accompanied by fee of R50 per poem. Payment may only be made in cash or by card at Folio Books.
Closing Date: Friday 26 November 2010.
Shortlisted entrants will be notified/announced by Wednesday 8 December 2010.
