We welcome submissions of poetry, fiction (short fiction or excerpts of longer works), drama as well as certain categories of nonfiction—memoir, despatch, and the occasional essay on literature or translation. For the moment, we only consider work translated into English.
There are four exceptions to this rule. We accept original work under the “Visual” category, but here we are especially looking for text that is poetic visually, and we require a short write-up, in English, explaining the visual poem. We also accept criticisms of published translations as well as interviews given by notable translators about the art of translation written in English, although we don’t mind if the interview was conducted in a different language and then rendered into English. We usually need a preface to introduce the translator’s body of work, to go along with the interview. Lastly, we also sometimes accept essays in English under the “Special Feature” section. Look out for the call for submissions as to what we are seeking for this section. It will vary from issue to issue.
For all these, we will need the contributors' bios(no longer than 100 words each) as well.
Otherwise, in all the rest of the cases, we require:
# Both the original and the translation
# Bios of both author and translator(s) (no longer than 100 words each)
# Permission for online publication for both languages
# A short write-up providing context to the work and discussing the challenges of this particular translation (less than 300 words, optional)
# An MP3 recording of a reading of the original text, highly encouraged for poems especially(optional)
Length guidelines are as follows. Poetry: no more than 5 poems. Fiction: no more than 5000 words. Drama: no more than 12 pages. Literary Nonfiction: no more than 5000 words. Criticism: no more than 1500 words. Interviews: no more than 5000 words.
As a courtesy to our contributors, we have decided to allow only the translations, accompanied by the original text, along with bios of both author and translator(s) to be submitted first, but please make sure that you have the other items on the submission checklist at hand to give us in the event of our accepting your work; our decision may be retracted otherwise.
All submissions should be sent via email, as Microsoft Word attachments(as .doc files please), to editors@asymptotejournal.com. Please include in your subject header the category(e.g. Fiction) of your submission.
Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but we ask in return that you notify us as soon as your work has been accepted for publication elsewhere.
