SENIOR EDITOR

JOB TITLE: Senior Editor

DEPARTMENT: Cosmopolitan Magazine

DIRECTLY REPORTING TO: The editor (or, in her absence, the deputy editor); the features editor (this being the primary, day-to-day reporting relationship); deputy editor (particularly in relation to editing); and the managing editor.

SUBORDINATES: the features writer, the fashion assistant.

SUMMARY

The main responsibilities are
• To manage the Johannesburg editorial team – mentoring juniors, ensuring deadlines are met, and overseeing the flow of work;
• To edit all copy generated by the Johannesburg office, as well as a portion of the editorial and promotional copy generated by the Cape Town office.
• When required, to write copy for the magazine

SKILLS REQUIRED

• Essential: minimum 2 years experience within the consumer magazine industry relating to the duties above
• A related tertiary qualification
• Above average general knowledge – able to edit a wide range of subjects (from fashion and beauty to health, finance and psychology)
• Have a good knowledge of – and a love for – the English language;
• Have an interest in and a good knowledge of popular culture in Johannesburg, South Africa and internationally;
• Have a proven track record of managing staff
• Handle deadlines and work effectively under pressure;
• Excellent organisational skills;
• Valid Drivers License

MANAGING EDITOR

JOB TITLE: Managing Editor

DEPARTMENT: Cosmopolitan Magazine

DIRECTLY REPORTING TO: The Editor (or her deputy); The Finance Department.

SUBORDINATES: None

SUMMARY

The Managing Editor, working as part of the senior editorial team, assists the editorial department, art department, fashion department and promotions department in ensuring deadlines are met and budgets are adhered to. When time allows, the Managing Editor helps with editing copy and getting pages ready for publication.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

• A proactive, problem-solving solutions-focused mindset;
• Excellent organisational skills;
• Creative initiative and passion for the brand;
• Effective communication, negotiation, arbitration, people-management, team-motivating and conflict-resolution skills;
• Being a team player;
• Ability to handle stress and cope under deadline pressure;
• Ability to work with budgets (with accuracy and attention to detail);
• Well-rounded knowledge of the magazine production process and understanding of the repro and printing process;
• Passion for the English language and a sound knowledge of syntax and grammar;
• Proven editing experience.
