Vacancy: Group Political Editor for Independent Newspapers (Cape Town)

The group Political Bureau has a vacancy for a GROUP POLITICAL EDITOR

Qualifications & Experience:

* A 3 year degree/diploma in Media Studies is essential
* A Managerial qualification will be advantageous
* 5 years experience as a journalist in the political arena is essential
* 2 years news editing experience is necessary
* Exposure to filing copy and images electronically
* Driver's license essential

Duties:

* Lead and manage a team of parliamentary/political correspondents
* Train and develop parliamentary/political correspondents
* Ensure proper processes are in place to ensure copy flow
* Manage the news agenda on a daily basis
* Convene news planning conferences daily / ideas are generated
* Generate and encourage the generation of ideas as well as ensure the execution of ideas
* Develop and encourage fresh news angles
* Conduct research
* Brief and de-brief parliamentary/political correspondents
* Brief Editors'News Editors of different titles about political diary of the day
* Establish a superior network of political contacts by constant interaction with politicians and government officials
* Ensure accurate and balanced coverage
* Ensure parties are given fair exposure in our titles relevant to size and strength
* Spearhead the provision of political content to fulfil online strategies
* Meet deadlines of all different editions streams of group titles
* Project a positive image of Independent Newspapers as a media organization across the political spectrum.
* Provide analysis, opinion and commentary that will make our titles the thought leaders of the industry.

Skills, Knowledge & Attributes:

* Knowledge of INL general business processes
* Knowledge of the Prestige system
* Knowledge of domestic and international political developments, legislative processes and all vertical and horizontal spheres of government
* Basic knowledge of labour relations
* Keeping abreast of developments in the political arena
* High-level presentation skills
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Excellent research skills, including superior skills for in-depth online research
* Conflict and dispute management skills
* Excellent relationship building skills
* Honesty
* Integrity
* Fairness
