Job description
The junior sub-editor is required to assist the head editor to ensure the proper presentation and delivery of all outgoing content from the company. This will entail proofreading and quality control across a number of written products, including on our websites. The candidate will need to be computer literate, with an understanding of the requirements of news and online environments. A strong interest in current affairs is essential.
The main responsibilities of the position are:
- Proofreading/copy-editing of various content written by the analyst team and other departments, from newsletters to reports and online content.
- Quality control - ensuring continuity and style (relevant to the company).
- Helping co-ordinate content on our various websites.
Requirements
- Language: very strong language skills; must be able to write competently and have a strong grasp of English. A good understanding of grammar is essential, as is the ability to spot and correct spelling and consistency errors.
- Knowledge: must have a strong interest in current global affairs.
- Organisation: must be able to manage a diverse and complicated work load and be able to delegate.
- Communication: due to contact with various departments, strong communication skills are a must.
- Computer literate: should be competent with Windows operating system along with Office applications; should not shy away from learning new technical skills. We use an in-house content management system and you must be comfortable with basic html and other web applications.
- Flexible: maintains effectiveness in a fast moving and/or changing environment with varying tasks, responsibilities or people.
- Stable under pressure.
- Reliable and takes pride in the quality of their work.
Background and experience:
- This is a junior role, and would be suited to a recent graduate with the right aptitude, interests and skills. Some experience in a media production environment or similar background would be preferred.
- Qualified to degree level or equivalent, particularly in some field that emphasizes writing and/or analysis.
- A formal qualification or certification in proofreading/copy-editing would serve as a recommendation, but is not a requirement.
- Bring some experience to the team such as being widely travelled or specific work background that would assist with the product we are developing.
Other:
- As we operate 24/7, shift and weekend work may be necessary, while occasional after-hours work will be required.
- The candidate must either be a South African citizen or be eligible to work in the country.
