PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Organizational Development Department (ODD) is a strategic department supporting headquarters and field activities through the development and maintenance of high-quality, time- and cost-efficient, and predictable (a) policies, (b) services, (c) systems, and (d) processes, that are developed in the best interest of the Joint Programme, and ensure UNAIDS organizational capacity to respond promptly and effectively to the environment in which it operates. ODD drives the adoption of new tools for improved business practices within the UNAIDS Secretariat.
The Administration Services Team (AST) as part of Organizational Development Department (ODD) provides leadership, coherence and coordination of services at a global, regional and country level in the areas of building and facilities management; conference services; logistical support; distribution services; document production; multi-lingual web publishing and maintenance; operational procurement; and safety and security; among others. The Team is the focal point for the achievement of a carbon-neutral UNAIDS.
Main tasks and Responsibilities of the Position:
Under the supervision of the Team Leader, Information Production Unit, the incumbent is responsible for the following:
1. To carry out the full editing required, including rewriting, abridging, simplifying or restructuring texts for greater clarity, readability, consistency and better logical sequence and to ensure that they express ideas clearly, are of a consistently high standard of excellence and adhere to UNAIDS' style and presentation.
2. To evaluate the suitability of manuscripts for issuance or publication with particular reference to the mandate for the manuscript and the UNAIDS publishing policy, taking into account quality, purpose and target readership. Recommending whether manuscripts be accepted, subject to varying degrees of editing, rejected or referred back, with supporting arguments, to the originating unit.
3. Identifying and reformulating or deleting passages likely to have adverse consequences for UNAIDS, clarifying ambiguities and correcting substantive and other errors in consultation with the appropriate specialists, if deemed necessary
4. To establish priorities for editing in the light of publication demands and within delegated authority to participate in project planning meetings.
5. To manage editorial workload and editorial production schedules, ensuring that documents are edited with due respect to deadlines, identifying and commissioning external editors, when workload requires, helping in the selection of appropriate contractors, and monitoring the quality and timeliness of their work and adherence to UNAIDS' style.
6. To liaise with translation coordinator on editorial matters to ensure timely production of translations and smooth workflow, and with the Publications Coordinator to adjust editing/proofreading tasks in response to changing publishing priorities.
7. To manage the publications process workflow, following up with projects as necessary and liaising with the Production Services Specialist to ensure publishing projects are followed up in a timely manner
8. To be responsible for UNAIDS' editorial policy and Chair of the technical advisory board to the Editorial board.
9. Undertake other related tasks as assigned.
Education:
First university degree in English Literature, Journalism, Communication or related field, complemented by training in editing.

Experience:
At least 5 years experience in professional editing and writing in a commercial or international work setting, complemented by experience in project management and management of external providers.
Desirable: experience editing scientific and/or medical material
Languages:
Advanced knowledge of English with demonstrated writing and editing skills.
Desirable: Working knowledge of French or of another UN official language.
