Job description
The main responsibility is to sub-edit all copy for publication (or to delegate), ensuring that it is in House and Leisure style and tone and that it is factually and grammatically correct.
Running the sub-editing department - managing the second copy editor to ensure deadlines are met, keeping track of style decisions and setting up systems for keeping copy flowing. Responsible for final sign-offs of pages before and after repro.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The chief copy editor reports to the editor
The chief copy editor also works closely with:
• the art department;
• the promotions/ marketing department and the repro house;
• the editorial department.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1) To sub-edit all editorial and promotional copy, which includes:
• correcting factual and language errors;
• checking style and tone;
• checking all contact details (phone numbers, email and web addresses);
• ensuring that all copy is as reader-friendly as possible - (easy to understand and a pleasure to read);
• inputting changes accurately;
• localising copy where necessary;
• watching out for inconsistencies, contradictions and repetitions;
• assisting to maintain the editorial standard of excellence.
2) To make sure each page has all the necessary elements, which includes:
• checking layouts for consistency of slugs, fonts and general design style;
• trimming copy to fit layouts;
• writing captions;
• checking that all necessary bylines, credits and tail lines appear (and are correct);
• doing page numbers after the book size has been confirmed;
• writing the contents page.
3) Managing the flow of copy from the time it is edited to sign-off, which includes:
• setting up systems with other departments to ensure sub-editors get the info they need;
• ensuring that all pages are correctly signed off;
• ensuring proofs are checked as early in the process as possible.
4) Managing the second sub-editor and when necessary freelance sub-editors, which includes:
• managing work flow within the subs department;
• assisting with the recruitment, selection, induction, training and performance appraisal of both the second sub and freelance sub-editors when necessary.
5) Keeping the HL style guide up to date as a reference for all who need it.

REQUIREMENTS
• two years' experience as a copy editor/ chief copy editor an advantage
• familiar with the Internet to use it as a research tool when facts need to be checked or explained
• Software: InDesign, MS Office
