Internews® Network is an international media development organization based in Arcata, CA and Washington, DC whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard.
General Function:
Internews Network is seeking a Journalism Advisor candidate for a USAID funded Media Sector Development Program in Mozambique. The goal of the program is to support the professionalization and empowerment of independent media in Mozambique, with a twin focus on journalists and media outlets in Maputo, as well as community radio stations across the country. The expected outcomes are: Increased Professional Capacity of the Mozambican Media Sector, Improved Journalism Education at the School of Communications and Arts at EMU, Assistance to Community Radio Stations and Support for Legal Enabling Environment for Media. The Journalism Advisor provides training, professional advice and guidance in print, radio and “new media” journalism, radio production and newsroom management.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Creates and implement specific training curriculum for community and main stream media
* Supervises the scheduling, design and implementation of journalist training workshops.
* Supervises the activities and performance of program coordinators, trainers and consultants.
* Provides guidance to local trainers on professional development workshops and activities.
* Analyzes the professionalism of media and recommends appropriate training programs.
* Mentors media outlets on news programming and ethical journalism practices.
* Supervises the operation and performance of the monitoring and evaluation section.
* Assists in the review of local media outlet equipment grant requests.
* Reports to and strategizes with CoP on new directions to help independent media in region.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Demonstrable Radio/print journalism experience
* Media management / newsroom management experience
* Experience living and working in region/developing world; experience in Sub-Saharan Africa preferred
* Familiarity with multi-faceted development programs, including planning, budget management and project reporting
* Experience in a supervisory position desirable
* Ability to analyze and adjust to shifting political circumstances and create programming accordingly.
* Sensitivity to cross-cultural dynamics in the work place.
* Relevant university degree.
* Fluent in Portuguese and English
* Ability and desire to travel to remote regions
