Job Opening: Magazine Editor for a New International Title (Associated Press, South Africa)

Position Summary:

Associated Magazines are looking to employ a Magazine Editor for a new international title that will be launched later this year.

The Magazine Editor is primarily responsible for ensuring editorial integrity of the brand in the South African market and for effectively differentiating the product from competitors in both the English and Afrikaans languages.

Effectively plan and assume final responsibility for all editorial content including but not limited to features, visuals, images, food, decor, fashion, promotions and beauty, online and ensuring content is fresh, compelling and unique to the brand.

BRAND MANAGEMENT:
  • Custodian of the South African brand.
  • Create a high quality magazine that conforms with the brand vision and formula of the International edition while maintaining direct relevance to the SA reader.
  • Balance the demands of reader and advertiser with integrity.
Responsible for:
  • Producing the magazine to the standards agreed with the board of Directors.
  • Ensuring that staff is thoroughly versed in the brand philosophy and style.
  • Communicating the philosophy through any marketing means and PR means necessary.
STAFF MANAGEMENT
  • Effectively organise, manage, motivate and mentor the editorial team.
  • Lead through example and clear vision, decisiveness and fairness.
  • Recruit and hire editorial staff (in conjunction with HR and management).
  • Ensure that company policies are adhered to throughout the editorial team.
  • Oversee and report on the production process from concept to final product
PR / CIRCULATION
  • Proactively network with and present as the "face" of the brand to key industry players and public.
  • Present and promote to the Advertising Industry, on TV and radio, and host workshops and functions, where deemed necessary.
  • Work with internal departments to find saleable editorial focus areas, ensure that circulation opportunities are maximised, and source new revenue streams.
  • Ensure that features department prioritises fresh, compelling SA stories to drive circulation.
EDITORIAL DIRECTION / MANAGEMENT
  • Regularly liaise with/report to Associated Magazines management and international partners and maintaining a close working relationships at all times.
  • Work closely with features editor to ensure that SA personalities, stories and celebrities are accurately reflected in magazine.
  • Ensure that covers and stories are presented in as compelling way possible.
  • Ensure that the correct demographics are reflected in the pages of the magazine.
  • Ensure that consistency of editorial tone is maintained.
  • Ensure that standards of excellence are applied to copy editing and editing in the title.
  • Ensure that all relevant editorial content is reflected in the correct tone and format on all digital platforms and in line with brand values.
  • Take final responsibility for signing off books.
Key Requirements:
  • Have a proven journalistic, business and brand management track record.
  • Have experience in social media and be comfortable creating compelling content across all platforms.
  • Be a trend-spotter, brilliant communicator and forward thinker.
  • Have a track record in spotting creative and commercial opportunities and have the ability to activate them and make them profitable in the South African market.
  • Understand the young, South African female consumer and be able to communicate with all readers with ease.
  • An industry relevant tertiary qualification.
  • Minimum of 4 years in a senior editorial position.
  • 3 years experience in the magazine or media industry.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of issues affecting South African Woman, of the SA social landscape and (sensitivity to political agendas) knowledge of the magazine industry.
  • Valid drivers license and willingness to travel loical and abroad.
Computer literacy: Word, Excell, Outlook, Powerpoint and Indesign

Key Competencies:
  • Strong content editor and writer with meticulous attention to detail in both Afrikaans and English.
  • Proven journalist ability and a solid understanding of consumer journalism.
  • Professional presentation and sound networking skills.
  • Excellent people and process management (well organised) skills.
  • Diplomacy in all communication and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Motivational team leader who proactively drives results.
  • Professionally handle stress, and work effectively and efficiently under pressure.
  • Demonstrate creative initiative and passion for the brand
  • Sound knowledge of all digital platforms and social networking activities.
