The position is not office based and not on full time basis. The off-site editor will assist the current editing team with overflow work as and when required.
Minimum Requirements
Qualification: A National Diploma or Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Communication Science (English, Applied English, Journalism, Technical writing or other: writing/communication) or equivalent qualification Experience: § 2 to 4 years of independent writing, editing and publishing experience. Editing experience- preferably experience in editing educational material.§ Editing/ proofreading course/ certificate advantageous.
Job Specification Key areas of responsibilities include, but not limited to:
* Prepare, rewrite and edit academic documents to improve readability and to ensure that they meet required academic standards.
* Edit manuals and other material for consistency, clarity and correctness.
* Read documents to detect and correct errors in spelling, punctuation and syntax.
* Provide support to the Faculty/ Faculties and / or the IIE with regards to correct language and grammar usage.
* Implement current style guides and formats.
* Edit and reformat both new and existing content.
* Allocate print space for document text, photos, and illustrations according to space parameters and copy significance, using knowledge of layout principles.
* Plan the contents of documents according to the publication’s style, editorial policy, and publishing requirements including adherence to correct academic standards and referencing techniques.
* Verify facts, dates, and statistics using standard reference sources – and insert such references accurately.
* Read material to determine index items and create contents page/ pages.
* Assist in setting guidelines for the editorial tone, style and voice.
* Develop innovative solutions for content presentation.
* Foster effective working relationships and work cooperatively with IIE staff.
* Maximise productivity and deliver quality material “on-time” as per scheduled deadlines.
* Contribute to overall team success by identifying problems and proactively identifying opportunities to develop and improve editing processes.
* Stand in for other administrative staff as may be required from time to time
* Work outside of normal hours may be required.
* Other tasks as are appropriate and as delegated.
