Job Opening: Deputy Editor for The Oprah Magazine (Associated Magazines, South Africa)

The deputy editor supports the editor in the execution of her role and as is the case with O, the Oprah magazine, is also the managing editor, responsible for the management and production of the magazines.

Deputy Editor
  • Along with editor, forms part of the management team of the magazine, and is responsible for the smooth running of the magazine.
  • Deputise and support the editor (manager emergencies in the editors absence and act as the editor would)
  • Liaison between the editor and the rest of the editorial team.
  • in the editors absence, sign off copy, proofs and dummy book.
  • Management of staff(staff issues, which includes leave, personal issues, performance, recruitment)
  • Along with the editor, mentor and train junior members of the editorial team
  • Supervise interns and work shadows
  • Liaise with the sales and promotions teams in identifying commercial opportunities for the magazine
  • Represent the magazine at functions, launches and events
  • Contribute to special projects and supplements
  • Offer ideas for revenue-generating promotion(reporting to the editor and liaising with the business development manager
  • Maintains an excellent network of contact
  • Contributes to the publications overall stance on major issues and engages in PR and publicity, if required
Editorial
  • Responsible for the entire LYBL section on the magazine, which includes the LYBL opener, 3bits pages, Good News and Aha Moment. These pagers are to be sent to the editor for approval before layout
  • Edit the letters page and source additional involving the magazines readers
  • Source and contribute features ideas
  • White features, captions, sidebars, intros when required
  • Provide quality control of magazine
  • provide marketing and PR input
  • Send booklists and put forward features request to the US
  • On occasion, negotiate rights and fees for printing, or reprinting, features and book extracts
  • Edit Reading Room, Main Fashion and Real People Fashion
Requirements
  • Have four or five years’ experience in woman’s magazines (writing and editing essential) and have a good grasp of the interests and profile of the magazine’s readers
  • Be well versed on the core values and brand pillars of the magazine
  • Have good knowledge of-and love for- the English language
  • Have an interest in and a good knowledge of popular culture in South Africa and internationally
  • Be able to work with copy on a wide variety of topics, from fashion and beauty to finance and psychology
  • Have excellent organizational skills
  • Handle deadlines and work effectively under pressure
  • Proven strong copy editing capability to work with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, including, good diplomacy, negotiation and people management skills
  • Proactive and demonstrates creative and passion for the brand
  • Enjoy working as part of a team and professionally handle stress
  • Computer Literacy
  • Adept in InDesign, Word, Excel
  • Able to navigate the internet with ease
