Job Opening: News Editor for The Citizen Newspaper (South Africa)

An opportunity for a News Editor exists within our Editorial Department reporting to the Editor of The Citizen newspaper.

Main Responsibilities:

• To compile and organize running diary for future events.
• To ensure the daily flow of news, pictures and other news material.
• To liaise with Editor, Reporters, Chief Sub Editor, bureaus and other editors.
• To manage the news room making sure problems are identified and dealt with promptly.
• To monitor electronic news, other newspapers and magazines.
• To monitor the wires.
• To work with reports and generate story ideas.
• To line edit stories, identify problems such as libel, inaccuracy and complete fair.
• To assist in hiring reporters.
• To assist reporters in writing and improving their work.
• To ensure all sources in the assigned beat areas are regularly covered.
• To liaise with photographic to ensure visual elements of stories.
• To ensure deadlines are met.

Requirements

• An appropriate bachelor's degree/diploma in Journalism
• Eight years in mainstream journalism specifically heading the news desk
• Awareness of the media law/revenue development
• Good talent for writing and copy tasting abilities

Other requirements:

• Grade 12 certificate a must
• Valid driver's licence
• Own vehicle
• Ability to work irregular hours
