Job Opening: Managing Editor for New Men's Lifestyle Magazine/ Quarterly Travel Magazine (Highbury Safika Media, South Africa)

Highbury Safika Media (Pty) Ltd is looking for a managing editor to work on a new monthly men's lifestyle magazine and quarterly travel magazine. The successful candidate should have a minimum of two years experience in a similar publishing environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

• Contributing content ideas for the magazine
• Assisting the editor with writing briefs and commissioning features
• Writing features and other content as required
• Liaising with the copy editing, design and repro departments
• Liaising with freelance writers and following up on their progress
• Liaising with the client
• Proofreading features from text documents through to print-ready layouts, ensuring correct grammar, style and tone
• Thorough fact checking of all copy
• Writing catchy headings, captions and intros
• Cutting and tracking copy to fit page layouts
• Editing supplements and bumper issues
• Drawing up and maintaining editorial progress and budget reports for the magazine and supplements
• Ensuring the smooth production of the magazine from concept through to print
• Maintaining the high editorial standard of the magazine

REQUIREMENTS:

• Three-year tertiary qualification in English, journalism or media studies
• A proficient writer and copy editor
• The ability to work under pressure and a willingness to work overtime when necessary
• A proactive and motivated self-starter with a strong sense of responsibility
• A minimum of two years experience in a publishing environment and knowledge of InDesign
