The University of KwaZulu-Natal is committed to student retention and throughput. In order to fulfil these objectives and to realize the University’s strategic goal to be an institution of choice for students, the College of Humanities seeks to appoint a Coordinator of the Writing Place (WP) on the Howard College Campus. The WP assists students from undergraduate to Masters level with their academic writing skills through an emphasis on essay/assignment structure and understanding of academic concepts. The primary function of the Writing Place is to provide one-on-one tutoring at the drop-in centre at the EG Malherbe library. The successful incumbent will report directly to the Director of Teaching and Learning and the College Dean of Teaching and Learning.
THE WRITING PLACE CO-ORDINATOR POST 2012
July 2012- June 2013 (one-year contract)
College Of Humanities
DUTIES:
• Planning and management of initiatives aimed at assisting students with their academic writing skills.
• Appointment and management of tutors to staff the WP student drop-in-centre.
• Planning and facilitation of student academic writing workshops, and development of academic writing material for teaching purposes.
• Prepare funding proposals for the WP
• Prepare the budget, manage finances and compile progress reports
• Interaction with Academic Development Officers in the Schools to develop and promote academic support programmes
• Tracking of students, staff liaising, marketing of WP.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Registered MA or PhD student
• Experience in programme coordination, or tutoring
• Good knowledge of the academic monitoring and support programme of the University and the College of Humanities
ADVANTAGES:
• Good communication skills
• Ability to work in a team as well as independently
• Computer literacy (word processing, spreadsheets and internet use)
• A valid code 8 drivers’ licence
