Job Opening: Financial Journalist for Pesa Talk (Kenya)

Pesatalk.com is Kenya’s fastest growing financial news and information publication. We focus on breaking down the world of finance and business for the ordinary mwananchi and focus on stories that affect making, saving, spending, investing, borrowing and planning money for individuals.

We are looking for highly motivated, passionate and smart writers to join our team on a full-time basis. WHAT WILL YOU BE EXPECTED TO DO?
  • Create and identify story ideas and pitch to the editor for approval
  • Receive story assignments from the editor for researching and writing
  • Create and maintain credible sources of information within the various organisations in our industries and areas of focus
  • Research and write stories as per our editorial guidelines
  • Promote and drive engagement and discussion around your stories on various social media communities
  • Update text and video stories as they develop
  • Live blog and tweet events in real time.
  • Submit coverage and new stories remotely and on the go
  • Manage content generated by users on Pesatalk.com and social media, and develop stories around such content
  • Provide insights and advice for the rest of the team

THE PEOPLE WE ARE LOOKING FOR SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
  • News judgement: Ability to identify a story that is timely, relevant, novel, and significant, identify what the story is and see multiple angles to a story.
  • Knowledge about the financial and economic systems – including the understanding of how financial markets work, the ability to read and understand company accounts, and the knowledge of the key economic indicators, regulations and policies.
  • Journalistic skills: You must be able to write fluent English in a simple, conversational tone, breaking down complex ideas into the simplest form, interview and probe to get at the real story, grammar and style, story combining/shortening, and maintaining objectivity. Lovers of buzzwords and technical jargon need not apply.
  • Tech/web literacy and savvy: You must understand how to use the internet to identify, research, compile and broadcast stories, manage user-generated content and cultivate online communities,
  • High performance: Detail-oriented, taking pride in producing error-free copy, curious and full of healthy skepticism, energy and passion, well-spoken and presentable in appearance, ability to work under time pressure, communicate well, succinctly and candidly, work on multiple projects and stories concurrently, capable of writing very quickly and work well with others

WE VALUE THE SKILLS LISTED ABOVE OVER THE QUALIFICATIONS BELOW, BUT HAVING THESE QUALIFICATIONS WILL GIVE YOU AN ADVANTAGE:
  • A degree in business, economics or, preferably, financial economics.
  • Experience in writing preferably in a web based publication
  • Technical skills like Photoshop, HTML or financial modelling will be an added advantage
  • Experience in industry such as banking, investment.
