The Pendle War Poetry Competition (worldwide)

The East Lancs première of "Bullets & Daffodils" - a new musical drama about the life and works of World War 1 poet Wilfred Owen will take place at the ACE Centre in Nelson on Thursday 18th October and to coincide with this historic occasion, we are pleased to announce the 2012 Pendle War Poetry competition.

The poem should have War as its theme and can relate to any era: Ancient Rome, Crusades, Civil War, Napoleonic, Boer War, First World War, Secod World War, Korea, Vietnam, Falklands, Middle East – or any other conflict. It does NOT have to be about fighting and killing and can also reflect political or social aspects of the theme.

COMPETITION RULES
  • The competition is FREE to enter and is open to everybody.
  • You do NOT have to live in Pendle to qualify but please bear in mind that the prizes are all Pendle related and no alternatives can be offered.
  • In order to enter, you must submit your poem by email to info@pendlewarpoetry.com , either as a word document attachment or in the body of the message, along with your name, locality (eg John Smith, Barrowford...) and a contact telephone number.
  • Entrants aged under 18 must get the permission of their parent or guardian before entering the competition and the name and contact phone number of the parent or guardian must be included with the entry.
  • The poem must be written in the ENGLISH language, be an original work written by you and should not have been published anywhere before.
  • The poem should be no more than 40 lines in length.
  • No swear words or offensive or inflammatory themes are allowed.
  • All entries must be received by 10th September 2012. Any entry received after that date will not be accepted.
  • The poems will be read by our panel of judges and the winning entries will be selected as follows: Adult Entrants: 1st 2nd & 3rd Prizes / Under 18 Entrant: 1st Prize.
  • The winning entrants will each be awarded a certificate as well as the prizes that are described on the Pendle War Poetry Competition website.
  • The winning poems will be posted on the Pendle War Poetry Competition website and circulated to local media and literary press for the purposes of reporting the result, further promotion of the competition and potential publication
  • The writers of the winning poems will be invited to the East Lancs premiere of the Wilfred Owen musical drama “Bullets & Daffodils” at the ACE Centre in Nelson on Thursday 18th October 2012 where they will have the opportunity to read their winning poem out on stage during the event.
  • If the writer cannot attend the event – or does not wish to read out the poem him/herself - somebody else can be nominated to read the poem instead.
  • The top 20 or so poems, as selected by the judges, will be published in a special “Pendle War Poetry Competition 2012” souvenir booklet, which will be available for sale on the night of the premiere at the ACE Centre, with proceeds of sales going to the Nelson & District Branch of the Royal British Legion.
  • The writers of the poems selected to go into the competition booklet will each receive a copy free of charge , with the option of buying further copies for family and friends at a reduced rate.
  • Official photographs will be taken of the winning writers at the ACE Centre evening on 18th October. These photos will be posted on the Competition website and may be sent out to other local media and literary press for the purposes of reporting the result and further promoting the competition for future years.
  • The decision of the panel of judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • Submission of an entry to the competition implies acceptance of all the conditions listed here.
