Southgate Mall and looklocal Alberton are giving all high school attending children who attend schools in Alberton an opportunity to write a short story which may win them amazing prizes.
Top three writers who are in Grade eight, nine and ten will each receive a brand new Blackberry Smartphone while the top three writers in the Grade 11 and 12 category will each receive a Samsung P1 tablet and a Kodak 14MP camera. While one lucky Grade 12 student will be awarded an opportunity to do a total of six months internship with Caxton Community Newspapers.
Southgate Mall and looklocal Alberton Writing Competition aims to give young people a platform to kick start a career in the media industry. High school students can post their entries from June 1 to August 31 via e-mail or deliver them to Caxton South offices.
All high school students in the South of Johannesburg and Alberton areas may enter for the competition. Look out for regular updates on your favourite news website, looklocal Joburg South and follow quick links on looklocal Alberton's facebook page.
Caxton will provide training to the winning Grade 12 student which includes a three month practical training at Caxton South Newspapers and three months intensive theory training with Caxton Editorial Cadet Training.
To enter the competition writers will have to write on the following topics for each month:
In June the theme is Pride. Entrants should write about the pride they have with regards to living in the South.
In July the theme is Respect and Honour. Writers should tell a story about respecting and honouring the people they live with, it can be teachers, parents fellow students and people in the community.
In August the theme is Celebrating women. Writers should tell a story about the role women have or continue to play in their lives. The stories can either be fact or fiction.
Grade 12 students should also write on the theme The Future. Writers need to cover topics such as, how will people's lives in Alberton improve in the years to come and if they see themselves contributing to change in the area.
