Call for Fiction with Protagonists from Underrepresented Minorities: Visibility Fiction

Visibility Fiction is seeking submissions for short, young adult, fiction stories with protagonists from typically underrepresented minorities. Such marginalised groups include, but need not be limited to, lesbian, bisexual, gay, transsexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual people, people from racial and ethnic minorities, and people with disabilities.

Note that there are no set limitations on the possible minority groups represented in stories. Also, although characterisations should be informed by the characters’ identities, stories should not be about being ‘different’.

We are primarily interested in stories that are written in the styles and genres of currently popular, mainstream young adult fiction.

We want good stories, with exciting plots and great characterisation. Do remember that the Visibility Fiction project is about undermining current visibility imbalances with positive, useful representations.

We strongly recommend that all authors submitting to Visibility Fiction familiarise themselves with the resources available on the Resources for Writers page.

Stories should be between 1000 and 4000 words, in standard manuscript format. Stories should be submitted as doc or docx files. Please ensure that your name, story title and the section to which you are submitting (Fiction, YA Writes, or Non-Fiction) are listed in your email subject and manuscript file title.

Submissions should be emailed to info [at] visibilityfiction [dot] com

POINTS TO NOTE:

We do accept simultaneous submissions, but let us know as soon as possible if your work has been accepted elsewhere.

Original works are preferred, but we will consider reprints. If your work is a reprint, please include any reprint information in your submission email.

Copyright remains with the author at all times. Visibility Fiction simply seeks the right to publish your story on our website. Should Visibility Fiction seek to compile an anthology of works, authors will be contacted at that time to work out terms.

Visibility Fiction is currently unable to pay authors or artists for their work. We do, however, offer exposure by way of publication, and provide authors/artists with a profile page, which can include a photo, bio, and links to personal sites and social media.
