Deadline July 15 | Job Opening: Correspondent for Thomson Reuters Foundation (Senegal)

Deadline: 15 July 2012

Thomson Reuters Foundation seeks Dakar-based correspondent.

Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of the world's leading provider of news and information, is looking for a well-rounded and energetic journalist to cover West Africa for its award-winning humanitarian and legal news websites.

From hunger crises and displacement to corruption, climate change and child marriage, this is a beat spanning some 20 countries and countless topics at the heart of development, aid, governance and human rights.

The job will involve reporting for the Foundation's AlertNet humanitarian news service and TrustLaw, a global hub of news and information on good governance, women's rights and pro bono legal assistance. There will also be scope for helping with TrustMedia journalism training projects and reporting for the Reuters wire.

In the event of a major natural catastrophe, the successful candidate may also be called upon to help run our Emergency Information Service for disaster-affected populations.

Based in Dakar, this is a job that would suit a mid-career journalist with excellent writing and editing skills, as well as an interest in multimedia reportage and web production.

You will work in the Reuters bureau in Dakar but be part of a London-based international team that is dedicated to empowering people in need with trusted information, increasing access to the rule of law and improving standards of journalism.

Candidates will need to demonstrate a wide range of skills. You should feel equally comfortable explaining the nuances of the global food aid system in plain and vivid English, hitting the phone to report on relief efforts after a crisis or subbing copy on women's rights or good governance issues into articles that sing.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:

· Reporting on issues of relevance for our Trust.org family of websites

· Liaising and coordinating with the Foundation's desk in London as well as Reuters desks in Dakar and London

· Enterprise and initiative reporting on humanitarian and human rights issues

· Helping manage a network of West African-based freelance contributors covering corruption issues

· Monitoring local media and other resources for breaking stories

· Representing Thomson Reuters Foundation in West Africa

The Foundation is offering this post initially as a one-year contract. The ideal candidate will have a journalistic background and international experience and be accustomed to operating independently.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference in a dynamic team that aims to put Thomson Reuters principles of speed, accuracy and objectivity at the disposal of our humanitarian, legal and media communities.
