The main purpose of the Copy Editor - Radio News is to source and provide quality news copy, for radio output, especially Current Affairs, that accurately reflect the latest newsworthy events locally and internationally, and attracts and retains the various targeted audiences. Radio News and Current Affairs editing involves reviewing text written on a topic, and identifying errors related to the use of language in general or adherence to a specific style guide.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- To identify available news stories within tight deadlines appropriate for target audiences across platforms
- To ensure the overall quality and accuracy of news content, language context, style and flavour – that meets the SABC’s ethical, editorial and production standards
- To optimise news impact with brief, illustrative, and contextualised script
- To seek / give consultation and advice on the delivery of “top stories”
- To re-write updates during broadcasts on breaking news or as new information arrives
- To keep up-to-date with news inputs and brief team with latest news development
- To manage and develop the performance of news staff through constructive feedback
- To continually communicate with relevant news to find newsworthy angles to stories
- To liaise with technical support regarding the specific delivery of news items
- To assist news presenters with accurate news reading delivery/ presentation
- To contact the source of origination or specialists to verify news content
- To liaise with regional Editorial Senior staff regarding their requirements and specific needs
- To correct statement in conflict with general knowledge
- Manage , couch and mentor junior editorial staff
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Degree/Diploma in journalism or related qualification
- Eight years copy editing experience of which two should be as an editor
- Five years journalistic writing experience
UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge and understanding of the complexity of the language mandate for news programmes
- Ability to” think on feet”
