Job Opening: Editor - English for the United Nations Office at Nairobi (Kenya)

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. We support programme implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services . This post is located in the Translation and Editorial Section of the Division of Conference Services (DCS), UNON, under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Unit.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Editing texts of a specialized or technical nature for accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice.
  • Consulting with author departments and carrying out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify errors.
  • Providing authors or others submitting documentation with information on specific aspects of editorial policy and practice and assisting them in the preparation of manuscripts.
  • Providing guidance to contractual editors and translators with a view to refining their skills and performance and assisting them in solving problems which require specialized knowledge, linguistic insight and political judgement.
  • Assisting the Chief of the Unit in the organization of work, especially during peak seasons, meetings and conferences, inter alia, in the composition of shifts and assignments to meetings in and away from headquarters, including those serviced by remote translation.
  • Deputizes for the Chief of the Unit on request and performs other administrative duties within the Unit which are assigned to her/him.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Client Orientation: Ability to identify clients' needs and match them to appropriate solutions. Ability to establish and maintain productive partnership with clients.

EDUCATION: A first level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Candidates for this position must have passed the relevant United Nations Competitive Examination for Editors

WORK EXPERIENCE: A minimum of two years of experience in editing, preferably within the United Nations.

LANGUAGES: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, perfect command of the language of the Unit, which must be the candidate's primary language, is required. Excellent command of two other official United Nations languages is required.

ASSESSMENT METHOD: Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
