Job Opening: Writer for University of the Western Cape (South Africa)

WRITERS (DEPARTMENT OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT)

The Department of Institutional Advancement is responsible for managing the University's relationships with key external and internal stakeholders and is committed to providing Best Practise in the areas of fundraising, communications, marketing and alumni relations.

TO QUALIFY, YOU WILL NEED:

• A degree in Journalism/Communications or a related qualification
• Editing experience, with proven ability to write articles independently
• 4 years' experience as a journalist, communications officer or health science writer
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English • News writing and editing skills
• Good interpersonal, planning and organising skills
• Computer literacy (MS Office)
• Ability to work in a team as well as independently
• A strong client focus
• Initiative
• Good time management skills
• Ability to work according to tight deadlines
• Stress tolerance and adaptability
• Information monitoring abilities
• Applied knowledge of Adobe InDesign and/or similar packages
• Ability to take photographs and use Photoshop or similar packages
• High work standards and quality orientation
• Professional/technical knowledge in the field.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS ENTAIL:

• Writing and editing publications, press releases and feature articles
• Liaising with contact persons in faculties and departments
• Developing news on science and health material for UWC publications, website and communication structures
• Assisting the media liaison with publicising alumni and sport stories
• Information management, including taking photographs of newsworthy events in alumni and sport publications
• Team support and contributing to departmental projects and functions
• General office administration.
