Job Opening: Writer/ Sub-Editor for eNews Online (Johannesburg, South Africa)

As the first free-to-air commercial television station in South Africa, e.tv has shown enormous growth since being launched in October 1998. With only six hours a day of broadcast time, the channel soon expanded to 24-hour programming. By 2001 e.tv became the largest English-medium channel in the country and the second largest overall, a position it retains with its “yesterday” viewership at 15.2 million (AMPS 2011). The broad appeal of e.tv’s programming has resulted in loyal viewers spanning all age, race and income groups across 80.5% of the South African population.

WRITER/SUB EDITOR x 4 - eNews Online Department (Johannesburg)
  • Reporting to the Online Editor: eNews Online your key performance areas include:
  • Write web-ready copy
  • Produce accurate and editorially sound copy from a variety of sources
  • Watch wire services and news feeds for the day’s news/breaking news
  • Convert broadcast scripts into web-appropriate stories
  • Flag changes and major moves in stories
  • Liaise with the Duty Editor and taking direction on delivery priorities
  • Basic Sub editing
  • Write headlines
  • Write local and international stories
  • Upload stories and visual content into the content management system
  • Ensure stories are tagged and effectively linked to other relevant content
  • Assist in deciding on how best to visually illustrate stories
  • Assist with the maintenance of and contribution to social network profiles
  • Occasionally deputise for the Duty Editor

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Computer literate
  • Be familiar with one or more web content management system
  • At least 1 year journalistic experience
  • Demonstrable interest in and passion for hard news
  • Editorial judgement
  • Understanding of online news and new media
  • Understanding of social media
  • Be computer literate
  • Excellent English
  • Strong writing skills and a passion for story telling
  • Strong visual sense
  • Strong understanding of journalistic ethics
  • Ability to work very quickly without sacrificing accuracy
  • Good grasp of legal issues around broadcast and online media
  • Strong work ethic and drive to deliver flawless outcomes
  • Good sense of humour and robust nature
  • Solutions- and outcomes-orientated
  • Ability to work under pressure making deadlines

NOTE:
  • The successful candidates will be required to work irregular and long hours, including weekends, public holidays and standby shifts.
