NATASJÉ VAN NIEKERK started her career in the entertainment industry as an actress. While struggling in London auditioning and taking classes, she managed to get hired by Gymboree Play and Music as an interactive play teacher. In layman’s terms she sang “the wheels on the bus” to babies and toddlers with their parents. Upon her return to South Africa, as part of a clear cosmic plan she landed a job playing the puppet-girl, Thandi in Thabang Thabong. And so one thing lead to another and her inner Dr. Seuss was activated. She started writing for Thabang Thabong – I’m sure we will look back at those naive scripts and shudder – and then School TV, Just Chill, Magic Cellar... which opened up the wonderful world of animated series. With great pride and gratitude you will hear her speak fondly of how Clive Endersby, acclaimed Canadian story editor, mentored her and hand-reared her as an apprentice children’s writer. And here she is: Many nominations and an international award later, writing for international animated series, goo-goo-ga-ga-ing for Baby TV and relishing every moment of Charlie and Lola. It’s probably also worth mentioning that Natasjé has also written soap, sitcom, drama series, romcom and magazine programmes. So yes, she is grateful to also be an all-rounder. Her most recently completed Children’s project is Madam Meerkat currently ridiculously early in the morning on SABC 3.
