Call for Applications: Young Female Journalists Mentoring Program of the US Embassy - Harrare and HIFC (South Africa)

The United States Embassy and the Humanitarian Information Facilitation Centre (HIFC) are inviting applications from interested individuals for its 2012- 13 Women Journalists Mentoring Program (WJMP). The intensive program will develop professional writing and leadership skills as well as opportunities for personal and professional growth for both mentors and mentees. Activities will include one-on-one pairing with experienced mentors; group meetings, discussions and trainings; an academic short course; writing evaluation; and some travel.

Participants who successfully complete all elements of the program receive a certificate.

Interested candidates should complete application forms and submit these to the Counselor for Public Affairs, U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section, 7th Floor, Gold Bridge, Eastgate, Harare or by e-mail.

THE PROGRAM

The program will engage and empower young women media professionals to ascend within their careers by enhancing professional standards, building professional support networks, addressing challenges in the workplace, and developing leadership skills.

The U.S. Embassy and HIFC are committed to providing the support needed for each participant to reach her professional and leadership goals recognizing that effective women journalists bring about a greater societal impact.

The program will tap into the skills and talents already resident in each practicing women journalist. Drawing on the expertise and mentorship of journalism experts, the program will allow participants the opportunity to master aspects of professional journalism as well as core leadership and management skills, in order to become effective journalists and newsroom managers.

This will be accomplished by offering individualized, innovative programming conducted by professionals in the region and abroad, including:
  • Strategically pairing participants with a senior mentor;
  • Building professional relationships through influential peer-to-peer networks;
  • Engaging participants in a network of high-impact thought leaders; and
  • Cultivating the leadership management skills needed to advance in challenging but dynamic newsrooms
  • Site visits of strategic institutions and media houses.
Participants are ultimately responsible for driving the mentorship program experience. PAS and HIFC will equip participants with what they need to build the relationships and get the most out of the year.

TIME COMMITMENT: Program activities will require a minimum of 16 hours per month. PAS will circulate a calendar of events ahead of each month and coordinate group meetings for participants. Additionally, participants will be expected to establish a meeting routine with their allocated mentors. Participants are responsible for setting the agenda for one-on-one meetings.

ELIGIBILITY: The program is open to women seeking a career in journalism, or in their final year studies to attain tertiary qualifications to pursue a career in journalism.

Shortlisted applicants will be notified by September 25th 2012.
