This panel seeks a broad range of papers addressing trends in African American literature and criticism since 1970. The panel asks contributors to assess the historical and social terrain shaping African American literature after the end of Jim Crow and the legal victories of the Civil Rights Movement. What do recent African American writers’ formal strategies and choices tell us about the post-segregation, post-Civil Rights social landscape within and against which they operate? How do aesthetics and politics interact in this literature?
