Job Vacancy: Copy Editor for Oprah Magazine (Cape Town, South Africa)

COPY EDITOR

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Editing editorial and promotional copy, correcting errors, checking facts and amending style and grammar usage as per in-house guidelines.
  • Writing or re-imagining headings, captions and intros on pages.
  • Checking layout for consistency of all elements, fonts and general style.
  • Researching all facts, so as to prevent factual errors (names, telephone numbers, stats, and so on).
  • Inputting requested changes accurately and timeously.
  • Localising copy where necessary.
  • Eradicating inconsistencies, contradictions and repetition.
  • Compiling the Shop Guide, together with the editorial assistant, and the Contents page.
  • Editing and fact-checking all articles for online publication.
  • Correcting published errors on oprahmag.co.za via the content management system.
  • Helping to maintain an editorial standard of excellence.
  • Inputting page numbers on final irises, after book make-up
  • Liaising with the promo department to facilitate client requests and ensure all promos are signed off.
  • Working with the Chief Copy Editor and Managing Editor in preparing documents for repro, marking up errors on irises and working through final corrections with the art department.
  • Ensure the mock-up board is always up-to-date.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • At least two years’ experience as a Copy Editor or editing experience
  • Superb general knowledge and a deep love for the English language.
  • Must be a perfectionist: a meticulous stickler for detail.
  • Excellent knowledge of syntax and grammar.
  • Sensitivity to tone – editing entails fashioning copy into a coherent, recognisably O piece.
  • Ability to rewrite clumsy or laborious copy without losing the writer’s voice.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Excellent organisational skills – must be thorough, systematic and focused.
  • Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Word, e-mail and the Internet.
  • Must love reading and find the editing process exciting.
  • Previous experience working for a magazine or any other publishing business is a definite plus.
