Job Vacancy: Editor for Huisgenoot (Cape Town, South Africa)

Huisgenoot, part of Media24 Weekly Magazines, has a vacancy for an energetic, news-obsessed and inspiring editor. The candidate will be based in Cape Town and will report to the editor-in-chief of HYD as well as the general manager of the titles. Such a candidate; with a relevant tertiary qualification in journalism, languages or media studies; has to have at least 10 years' editorial and three years' management experience.

The ideal candidate will be a versatile editor: someone who can think independently and creatively and function effectively in a team context. This person needs to deliver a well-rounded magazine to ensure targeted circulation weekly. The successful candidate will, amongst other things, be accountable for strategy, the magazine's weekly content, effective production as well as leading the team.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

STRATEGIC
  • Responsible for implementing the strategic positioning of the publication in the market - the editor is also required to help formulate such a strategy with the publishing team and editor-in chief;
  • To constantly tweak and adapt the editorial vision to take the publication forward and implement a 360 strategy to achieve this vision;
  • Ensure readership targets are met (notwithstanding external market factors) by leading and managing all aspects of editorial planning.
  • Clearly understand the reader by continually evaluating feedback and comment, while also monitoring, evaluating and implementing trends in global media;
  • Manage and report on commercial imperatives operating in the magazine publishing environment;
  • Conceptualise, execute and present creative concepts whether for editorial or commercial objectives.

EDITORIAL AND PRODUCTION
  • Assume overall editorial responsibility and control of the title, staff and contributors on all relevant platforms;
  • Set and constantly evaluate editorial policy for the publication;
  • Have an acute news sense;
  • Have the ability to conceptualise stories around relevant topics with the right angle to ensure longevity;
  • Generate ideas for articles and select topics that are relevant;
  • Ensure that all copy is delivered within stipulated deadlines and to standard, rejecting copy that is not to brief or standard;
  • Conceptualise and manage supplements that stimulates circulation and meets advertiser needs;
  • Oversee weekly production and functioning on all platforms (print, digital, infographics) excluding brand extensions;
  • Manage and control the editorial budget and costs, not exceeding editorial budgets;
  • Approve copy and design in line with the editorial vision - help team to come to solutions if copy or design is rejected;
  • Brief and debrief editors, journalists, photographers, designers and language practitioners on all aspects of the magazine.

LEADERSHIP
  • Lead, motivate, mentor and inspire a team and mobilise them around the editorial vision;
  • Represent the brand and act as an ambassador of the brand;
  • Work with the marketing team on reader and industry events to build brand loyalty and innovative reader contact points;
  • Be able to solve problems effectively and within a reasonable time;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Be an excellent communicator;
  • Have a healthy sense of objectivity, humour and responsibility;
  • Be painful about detail, without losing sight of the objective.
