Job Vacancy: Part-Time Writer/ Editor for Medecins Sans Frontieres (Johannesburg, South Africa)

MSF SA’s Communication Unit raises awareness and an understanding about medical humanitarian crises in countries where MSF works within theSouth African society, through media and communication projects. The team also provides communication support during recruitment, fundraising and advocacy initiatives.

The Communication & Information Officer is responsible for the production and dissemination of a range of communication materials, print publications and material for online and social media usage.
  • Title of the function: Communication & Information Officer (Writer/ Editor) – Part Time
  • Type of contract: 0.5 FTE [3 days per week], 12 months, 3 & 6 month review cycle
  • Starting date: Immediately / mid-September

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

CONTENT PRODUCTION AND COORDINATION

The Communication & Information Officer is responsible for:
  • The production of MSF SA’s donor magazine (MAMELA) in line with editorial guidance from the Head of Communication and a representatives of the MSF SA editorial committee:
  • Working along with the Communication Unit to propose content in advance, produce, appropriately edit material and have it validated by the Head of Communication
  • Liaising with contracted production agents for the layout, printing and distribution of the magazine
  • Through the editorial committee encouraging and identifying improvements to the content & structure of MAMELA when and where required
  • Working closely with the Web&Publications Officer to produce a bi-monthly online newsletter (e-Mamela) in line with website and editorial guidance. This entails proposing content, appropriately edit material and have it validated by the Head of Communication.
  • Working closely with the Communication team members to maintain relationships and information flows with MSF SA field workers on assignment and to generate an adequate amount of content [interviews, articles, photos etc] about their experiences working with MSF for recruitment and fundraising purposes.
  • Develop and produce specific MSF SA communications materials or articles when needs are identified. This involves the planning and coordination, writing, editing, of defined materials as well as liaising with production companies
  • Identify and develop background documents, interviews, articles for MSF publications and produce multimedia materials when requested.

SUPPORT:
  • Provide support for communications and advocacy initiatives developed by MSF SA
  • Ensure the consistent flow of internal information for MSF SA (operational updates and publications)
  • Assist the Web & Publications Officer with the development of social media outreach activities
  • Maintain, identify and grow a contacts with designers, editors and publications, while managing existing relationships with production agents
  • Work closely with the Web&Publications Officer to provide assistance on the development of social media outreach activities requiring texts
  • Maintain, identify and grow a diverse contact data base of South African designers, editors and publications, while managing existing relationships with production agents

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • 3-5 years professional work experience in creating, editing and coordinating the production of content in the South African or international media industry
  • An advanced university degree in Communication or Journalism. Experience at international non-governmental organisations, international relations or public health valued highly
  • A good understanding of humanitarian action and media systems
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English (to be tested during the selection process)
  • Computer literacy and social media tool proficiency
  • Experience in graphic design and page layout is an added advantage
