Presented by Natasje van Niekerk: Introduction to Writing for Kid's TV (South Africa)

Date: starts 15 September 2012

The Introduction to screen writing for children course is designed to give writers new to the genre or beginner writers, an overview of writing for children’s TV shows. The classes will be a combination of theory and praxis with script samples and episodes of Children’s shows to illustrate.

At the end of four weeks students will:
  • Know the difference between writing for children and writing for adults
  • Have an understanding of the various mediums available – animation, live action and magazine
  • Understand the difference between entertainment, edutainment and educational content
  • Understand the different age groups and their needs
  • Understand the nature of storytelling for children as well as have a clear grasp of what is appropriate, and what is inappropriate for children
  • Be able to write a synopsis, an outline / beat breakdown and a script at a basic level – it is only four weeks, if writers are experienced, they need only four weeks to grasp a new genre. Beginner writers will however only get a gist of what is expected from them.
This course is great for understanding serial type writing – if you have a series of kids BOOKS in mind – though the course does not deal with publishing, it will show you how to put the whole shebang together.

Each writer’s will determine their own progress depending on how much work they are willing to put into the course.

Duration of classes: Classes are two hours in duration with an extra hour allowance for discussion / one-on-one script / outline / story discussions; Course will last for four weeks.

Location: Classes will be taught at 24A Aberdeen Street, Westdene (next to Melville). I will provide plugpoints for laptops.

Class Times: Classes are Saturdays from 10:00 to 13:00 starting on 15 September 2012.
