Call for Entries: 2012 Webber Wentzel Legal Journalist of the Year Award (R50,000 top prize | South Africa)

The Webber Wentzel Legal Journalist of the Year Award recognises outstanding work in the field of legal journalism. It was founded in 1999 to acknowledge the role played by journalists in promoting knowledge of the judiciary and understanding of the country’s civil and criminal justice systems.

THE PRIZES
  • PRINT MEDIA (including online publication): R 50 000
  • RADIO: R 50 000
  • TELEVISION: R 50 000
  • No runner up prizes will be awarded.
WHO MAY ENTER: Any journalist reporting on legal issues in the print or broadcast media in the Republic of South Africa.

THE AWARDS CEREMONY: The winners will be announced at an award ceremony to be held at Webber Wentzel, 10 Fricker Road, Illovo Boulevard, Johannesburg on Wednesday 7 November 2012 from 12h00-14h00.

CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES: Entries must be received by no later than 17h00 on Wednesday, 10 October 2012 (Proof of publication must be included).

JUDGES
  • Franz Kruger is adjunct professor and director of the Wits Radio Academy. He is also the ombud for the Mail&Guardian, a member of the SA Press Appeals Panel and the editor of www.journalism.co.za. His book Black, White and Grey: Journalism Ethics in South Africa was published in 2004, while a second title, The Radio Journalism Toolkit, was published in 2006. Both are widely used as prescribed text at colleges and universities in South Africa and abroad.
  • Professor Tawana Kupe is Associate Professor in Media Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Wits University. He has taught Media Studies at universities in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Norway. He has been a columnist for The Sunday Times, City Press, The Media and Maverick. He has been a judge for the Vodacom Journalism Awards and is a Convener of Judges for the Discovery Health Journalism Awards. Tawana is also currently a columnist for New Age newspaper and a regular commentator on radio and TV on media and journalism issues.
  • Joe Thloloe is a respected South African journalist and current Press Ombudsman. He is a former chairman of the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF), deputy chairman of the Southern African Editors' Forum (SAEF) and president of the Union of Black Journalists and Media Workers Association of South Africa. Thloloe has worked as a journalist for over 50 years, including publications such as The World, Rand Daily Mail, Golden City Post and Drum magazine, and is a former deputy editor of Sowetan. He was also editor in chief of both SABC News and e.tv News.
JUDGING CRITERIA: Quality of reporting that demonstrates the ability to understand, interpret and provide in-depth analysis or comment on legal issues and developments that impact on society and people’s lives. Balanced and objective reporting and clarity in terms of representing how the given issues impact on or affect the future. Ability of the entrant to report on one or more aspects of the legal issues and proceedings.

RULES
  • The Webber Wentzel Legal Journalist of the Year Award 2012 is open to all journalists working and reporting on legal issues in the Republic of South Africa on a freelance basis or as full time employee.
  • Articles written by Webber Wentzel staff and legal professionals for legal publications are excluded.
  • Only work published or broadcast between 1 September 2011 and 31 August 2012 may be entered.
  • An entrant may submit up to four articles or reports in the print and television category.
  • In the radio category, there is no limit on the number of entries but the total length should not exceed 20 minutes.
  • Entries that cannot be clearly read, viewed or heard will not be considered.
  • Entries may be on a single topic or part of a series.
  • Submissions should be accompanied by a photograph (for marketing purposes).
  • All entries should be accompanied by a brief synopsis, accompanied by a motivation for their selection.
  • If material is submitted that does not include a byline or other clear reference to authorship, a letter from the editor shall be submitted to confirm that the work is the entrant’s own.
  • Entries may be in any of South Africa’s official languages.
  • Finalists will be notified in writing and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • The judge’s decision is final and judges reserve the right to withhold prizes where entries in their opinion fail to meet the requisite standards.
  • The prizes are not transferable.
  • The prizes will be presented at an official awards function at 12h00 on Wednesday 7 November 2012.
  • Finalists agree to be photographed and will be required to attend the awards ceremony.
