Call for Journalists: Social Media Youth Trainer and Developer Vacancy at Action Aid (Nairobi, Kenya)

ActionAid International Kenya (AAIK) is a member of ActionAid Federation; ActionAid works in more than 40 countries all over the world, in the places where we can make the biggest impact. Global Platform Nairobi is a joint project under AAIK and ActionAid Denmark under the Training4change programme which provides spaces for innovation, creativity, solidarity, cultural exchange and growth in a myriad of ways.

The Global Platforms function as youth hubs and incubation centres and the trainers are part of a global network working with different Global Change modules: Youth Participation and Governance; Campaigning; Social Entrepreneurship; Training and Facilitation; and Social Media.

The social media module will be developed and implemented at the Nairobi Global Platform; we therefore seek to recruit two (2) Social Media Youth trainers specifically in charge of the (a) technical and (b) communications aspects of the training programme and with very good inclusive facilitation skills targeting young people.

JOB TITLE: Social Media youth trainer and developer – Journalist/Communications profile
  • Location: Nairobi Kenya
  • Reporting to: Global Platform Manager
  • Station: Global Platform Nairobi
  • Duration: Interim position (3 months contract with the possibility of extension up till 2 years)
  • Start date: November 1st
JOB PURPOSE: To develop, document and conduct new Social Media courses, establish local, regional and international Social Media partnerships, develop new initiatives and ensure other staff around the world will receive and benefit from the training manuals and knowledge lead on Social Media. Hence, also partake in developing the Global Change framework. The main responsibility is to be in charge of the communication and Journalism aspect of the programmes.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Co‐develop ActionAid’s New/ Social Media training (Manual and Scripts) targeting youths from youth groups and organizations.
  • Recruitment of participants, evaluation, follow up of the training programme;
  • Basic budgeting and accounting for the programme;
  • Pilot Activista Social Media course; (Activista is AAIK’s youth‐led campaign network);
  • Conduct the Social Media training on the Communications and Journalism part of Social media training development;
  • Share and institutionalize Social Media knowledge and developments with the rest of the Platform and the Platforms worldwide;
  • Initiate cooperation and partnerships with other technical experts, youth and information organizations both in regards to developing common activities as well as buy‐in to the courses;
  • Take part in the global knowledge network and be the knowledge source for the other global platforms;
  • Co-develop the Social Media hub for the new Global Platform in Nairobi (activities and initiatives besides from the trainings);
  • Develop and conduct other initiatives related to Social / New Media and communications and youth participation;
  • Update yourself on the most recent developments and new tools to enhance citizen’s participation and communication;
  • Partake in conducting needs assessments among youth groups including those at ActionAid’s
  • Local Rights Programmes and partners
  • Further develop and maintain the GP Nairobi’s Social Media profile via dynamic online platforms
INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: Activista Kenya coordinator, Technical Advisors, LRP managers; Global Change Knowledge team, Global Platforms around the world, Activista International

EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:  CSOs specifically ICT organisations, INGO, Kenya’s ICT board, local, national and international media, AA partners & other stakeholders.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:  First degree in Journalism, Communications or other relevant degree (BA level)

WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • At least 2‐3 years post degree working experience
  • Documented experience in conducting training and development of participatory training courses
  • Documented experience in facilitation and action based leaning with young people
  • Solid experience in blogging and engagement in the public debate via Social Media
  • Experience in using Social Media tools and development of new ways of using existing Social Media platforms
  • Documented experience in using Social Media as part of your work
  • Documented experience in writing engaging news articles, blog posts and comments
  • Understanding of gender issues in development and demonstrable commitment to promoting gender equity within the organisation.
  • Experience in working with and promoting Social Justice
  • Demonstrated experience with activism, advocacy work, campaigning and lobbyism
  • Demonstrated work with youth empowerment and capacity building of youth groups
COMPETENCIES:
  • Good understanding of participatory methods in learning and strong facilitation skills
  • Advanced understanding of the usage of New Media (Social Media, mobile etc.)
  • Demonstrated and very good IT skills
  • Good understanding of Human Rights Based Approach to development. A good understanding of human rights, women’s rights, and socio‐economic justice
  • Excellent communications skills both orally and written
  • Organised and structured and good in planning own work
  • Having an enterprising approach to work and comes up with new ideas
  • Strong analytical/and problem solving skills
  • Fluency in English
  • Ability and experience of working with different cultures and nationalities.
  • Knowledge of ActionAid is an added advantage

  • Self‐motivated person and ability to motivate your colleagues and keep the spirit high in stressful situations
  • Effectively promote the AAI, AADK and AAIK’s mission values, and objectives with time
