The successful candidate will be required to edit and improve copy to the point where it is ready for publication. His/her responsibilities may include rewriting and proof reading. This role requires candidates to work across digital and print news platforms.
He/she must be available to work in the evenings and on weekends (this position will involve shift work).
DUTIES:
- Sub-edit and improve copy, write headlines, blurbs and captions
- Check copy against style, and check and add metadata according to preset guidelines
- Rewrite and repurpose content from one platform to another
- Revise copy and pass print pages if required
- Give detailed feedback to desk editors and reporting staff on individual stories
- Train and/or mentor junior staff when required
- Assist in administrative duties
- Be prepared to work on all Business Day publications and platforms
- Minimum five years' experience in journalism
- Excellent all-round ability in written and verbal English, command of grammar and spelling beyond question
- A wide-ranging interest in current affairs, with a sound understanding of the South African business and political landscape as well as business and financial matters
- Broad general knowledge
- Previous experience working in a digital space and or a news agency would be an advantage
- An ability to improve copy at speed and work on tight deadlines while prioritising competing demands
- An above-average level of computer literacy and the ability to learn new computer systems with ease
- Previous experience on the GN3 application suite will be a decided advantage.
