Job Vacancy: Markets Reporter at Business Day Live (Rosebank, South Africa)

The job requires someone with a solid understanding of the dynamics, processes and terminology in the different financial markets in South Africa and an interest in banking. A knowledge of and contacts in this sector in South Africa and elsewhere in Africa would be a distinct advantage.

This is a junior to mid-level post.

The successful candidate will be a fast worker who can produce accurate, well-written copy on demand and under pressure for a dynamic, multiplatform, digital-first editorial operation that includes South Africa’s leading business newspaper and a premium website aimed at the business market. Copy will include breaking news, in-depth features and backgrounders.

The successful candidate will be part of a small team of reporters covering the equity, currency, bond and futures markets in general, with a strong focus on listed companies in South Africa in particular. The markets team plays a key support role to the companies department. Working with this team requires a collaborative mindset, information-sharing and a readiness to fill in for and work jointly on projects related to and outside his or her beat.

Candidates must be available to work in the evenings and on weekends.

DUTIES:
  • Cover market movements and trends, using knowledge of the market and listed entities to track and, through research and interaction with sources in the market, bring understanding of these activities to a range of readers including financial professionals (such as fund managers) and general corporate decision-makers and investors
  • Interview sources
  • Develop and maintain a network of contacts
  • Generate and follow up own ideas for news and feature stories
  • Work with photographic, graphics and multimedia teams to help produce interactive, audio and visual content
  • Availability to work in the evenings and on weekends
SKILLS:
  • A qualification in journalism, with sound news judgment, an excellent command of English and generally good writing skills
  • A minimum of three years' working experience in a newsroom plus proven experience writing business stories
  • A valid driver’s licence
  • Initiative, self-discipline and resourcefulness
  • The ability to use the web as a research tool and to quickly master new electronic content and data management tools to collect and produce content
