The Media Council of Kenya is a statutory body established in October 2007 by the Media Act CAP 411B as the only institution that regulates media and ensures proper conduct and discipline amongst journalists.
The Council runs the Annual Journalism Excellence Awards [AJEA] in May each year targeted to coincide with the World Press Freedom Day celebrations. The main objectives of the award are: to recognise and award excellence in journalism, encourage professionalism in the practice of journalism as provided for by
the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya and to encourage Development Journalism in Kenya in respect to Vision 2030.
The Council is calling on Kenya journalists (definition of journalist will be as per the Media Act 2007 (CAP 411B)) to submit work published or broadcast in the local media within last year, including up to 15th March 2013.
RULES OF ENTRY:
- There is no entry fee.
- An applicant must be a Kenyan Journalist (definition of journalist will be as per the Media Act 2007).
- Entries must have been published/broadcast within the past calendar year. This being from March 2012 to 15th March, 2013.
- Age limit: Only applicable to the Young Journalist of the Year Award. Must be 25 years as of March 2013.
- Entrants must attach a one page professional, academic background and biography to their entries.
- Print entries: Stories submitted MUST be original copies of the stories (in PDF or on CD).
- Photographs: Entries MUST be cuttings of the original.
- Cartoon: Entries MUST be cuttings of the original.
- All print entries must include date of publication.
