Funding Proposal Writing Workshop Organized by Ithuba Arts Fund and Assemblage (South Africa)

The aim of this workshop is to give participants the necessary skills needed to draw up a comprehensive funding proposal that includes a budget. By applying the theory to a practical case study, the participant will engage directly with the material throughout the day. The workshop will also introduce the attendees to some funding options available to artists in the Johannesburg area.

The workshop will be facilitated by Louise Van Der Bijl and Mandy Johnston. This workshop is a collaboration between Assemblage and the Ithuba Arts Fund.

  • Cost: R100 (bursaries available)
  • What to Bring: Notepad and pen, your ideas around possible projects you would like to apply for funding.
  • RSVP: In order to attend, please submit a half page motivation letter to workshops@assemblage.co.za.
Please note this workshop is aimed at visual artists but all motivations will be considered. There are limited number of bursaries available to those who cannot afford the fee. Please include in your motivation if you would like to be considered for a bursary.

FACILITATORS’ BIOGRAPHIES:

Louise Van Der Bijl (Ross) was born in 1984 in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal. She now lives and works in Johannesburg. She completed her BA Fine Arts degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2007. She has exhibited on numerous group exhibitions including The Ithuba Arts fund Exhibition, 2011, held at the Lister Building; The Art of Assemblage, 2011, side exhibition at JoburgFringe; Sites of Memory, 2008, The Thompson Gallery; Collaborations, 2007, Wolmarans Street Gallery Space; and Work in Progress, 2007, at a Sandton construction site. She worked as the gallery manager of Brodie/Stevenson gallery from 2008-2010 and gained much knowledge about the South African art industry. In 2010 she co-founded and now runs a non-profit organisation named Assemblage, which seeks to assist artists in Johannesburg. She works in all forms of paint and loves to create new things.

Mandy Johnston lives and works in Johannesburg South Africa. She graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a Masters degree in Fine Arts in 2003 and has since been involved in many inner city projects and initiatives. Mandy currently teaches art part time, sculpts for commissions and is the workshop coordinator for an artist facilitation organisation called Assemblage. Her recent show, ‘Subject to Change’ explores value formation
