Job Vacancy: Deputy Sports Editor for Cape Argus (South Africa)

The Cape Argus is looking for a Deputy Sports Editor to assist the Sports Editor take charge of a vibrant sports desk. he successful applicant will have a proven track record in newsroom management, be organised and energetic, and be brimming with ideas.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist the Sports Editor with the sports department and manage its resources effectively to generate sports content and produce pages for the Cape Argus as well as taking special responsibility for the Weekend Argus Sports pages.
  • Present sports diaries at the daily news conference.
  • Manage the sports team in the absence of the Sports Editor, including assigning reporters.
  • Rewriting copy accurately and to deadline to suit the editorial style of the Cape Argus.
  • Be available to copy sub editors who may require clarity or direction on stories.
  • Assist with sub-editing, layout and design and assume full responsibility for the co-ordination of the work of the Sports Team.
PREFERRED MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Have at least 5 years experience as a sports journalist, and some news desk experience.
  • Have a relevant tertiary journalism or related qualification.
  • Have a working knowledge of a Daily Newspaper operation and the production requirements.
  • Have a keen sports news sense and be able to initiate good story ideas on sports news locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Have a wide range of contacts within various sporting codes.
  • Have an exceptional understanding of the Cape newspaper market.
COMPETENCIES:
  • Ability to work well in a team and have excellent communication skills.
  • Have excellent interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Must have excellent re-writing skills and the ability to work under pressure in a deadline driven environment.
Experience in sub-editing, design and layout will be an advantage.
