Among other aspects of this work, Khanya publishes a range of newsletters, a newspaper, books and brochures. Khanya College is looking for a social justice activist to work in the position of:

SUB -EDITOR:
  • The main duty of this position is to research, write, edit, proofread and file news stories, features and articles for use in our monthly newspaper Karibu, and for our various websites.
  •  The deadline for applications is: 29 March 2013.

THE DUTIES OF THIS POSITION ARE:

A: Research and Writing (Newspaper & Websites)
  • Reading press releases
  • Researching articles
  • Establishing and maintaining contacts
  • Interviewing sources
  • Writing, editing, and submitting copy
  • Attending events
  • Proofreading
  • Verifying statements and facts
  • Staying up to date with privacy, contempt and defamation law
  • Liaising with editors, sub–editors, designers and photographers.
  • Setting up syndication agreements with various newspapers around the country and in other parts of the world
B: Sub Editing
  • To sub-edit all editorial and promotional copy, which includes:
    • Correcting factual and language errors;
    • Checking style and tone;
    • Ensuring that all copy is as ‘reader-friendly’ as possible — i.e., easy to understand and a pleasure to read;
    • Inputting requested changes accurately;
    • Localising copy where necessary;
    • Watching out for inconsistencies, contradictions and repetitions;
    • Helping to maintain the editorial standard of excellence.
  • To make sure each page has all the necessary elements, which includes:
    • Checking layouts for consistency of slugs, fonts and general · design style;
    • Trimming copy to fit layouts;
    • Writing captions;
    • Checking that all necessary bylines, credits and tail lines appear;
    • Doing page numbers after book makeup;
    • Helping the chief copy editor to compile the stockists list;
    • Helping the chief copy editor write the contents page.
  • Support work of community and activist journalists, and trainee journalists. This will include:
    • Helping activists and trainee journalists improve their writing, especially from the vantage point of making the work of the sub-editors easier
    • Running writing workshops for activists and trainee journalists
    • Running internal Khanya workshops aimed at creating a house style, and at ensuring that Khanya staff can generate copy for the newspaper and its various newsletters.
  • Helping with Editorial work
    • Where necessary, the Editors and help with editing various other Khanya group publications.
    • Help with managing the editorial process.
  • Manage staff
    • The journalist editor will also be responsible for managing staff that will include junior journalists and activist journalists.
OTHER DUTIES:
  • It is a requirement for all staff to be involved in the marketing of the organisation. ·
  • It is a requirement for all staff to travel in the course of their duties from time to time and if necessary to make use of their own vehicles for this purpose.
  • It is a requirement for staff to make themselves available for out of town travel from time to time. This may take the form of local or international travel.
  • Staff are required to take part in organizing other College activities as and when it becomes necessary.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Tertiary qualification in journalism or humanities, or an equivalent qualification and/or experience.
  • Proven interest in social justice issues.
  • Proven experience in researching stories, writing and sub-editing
  • Ability to write and present reports.
  • Ability to work to strict guidelines.
  • Ability to write for a popular audience.
  • Ability to manage staff
  • Strong presentation skills and clear and confident in team communication.
  • Computer literacy (incl. Excel), online research and email applications.
  • Preferably multi-lingual.
  • Preferably owner of driver's licence (Code 8).

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The College offers traditional benefits like medical aid, provident fund, and 13th cheque. The salary range for this position, depending on experience and skills, is R160 600 to R192 600 per annum (Total Cost to Company – all inclusive of medical and provident fund) depending on experience.
