Online Journalist Wanted for IQ4News (South Africa)

IQ4News is looking for an online journalist who can produce content for the web. The journalist will be responsible for researching, writing, capturing visual and audio content, and editing general assignment stories. The ideal candidate will be a news junkie who stays informed with trends and has a nose to bring out investigative and penetrative analysis of news from South Africa. S/he will be up-to-date with new technologies, and must be experienced in using online and digital platforms like Facebook, Twitter and mobile technologies for journalistic purposes.

We are not looking for the clichés or tried-and-true formats, highlights and sound bites. We're looking for a journalist with an ability to break away from routine, create memorable programming for the web and an ever expanding digital environment.

ONLINE JOURNALIST
  • Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Salary: R3,500 - 4,000/month

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Produce daily news
  • Shoot and edit video and audio reports
  • Feature writing
  • Evaluate news leads, newswires, press releases and tips to develop story ideas
  • Gather and verify factual information regarding stories
  • Produce stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards
  • Shoot still photos to illustrate stories
  • Use online and social media tools creatively for newsgathering, participation and delivery
  • Research and suggest compelling story angles
  • Other general assignment reporting

PERSONAL SPECIFICATIONS

Essentials:
  • Degree in relevant or equivalent professional qualifications/experience
  • Ability to use multimedia software and platforms (e.g. Skype) to gather and produce news
  • Strong Interviewing skills
  • Ability to use social media platforms (e.g. Twitter) and other online platforms to research, gather, deliver and follow news
  • Knowledge and demonstration of editorial judgment, journalistic ethics and libel laws
  • Computer literate
  • Ability to shoot and edit video reports for the web
  • Ability to shoot and edit audio reports for the web
  • Ability to shoot and edit still images
  • Strong writing skills
  • Proficient at posting content online
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment
  • Experience of working successfully both within a team and on one’s own initiative
Desirables:
  • Has own kit (video camcorder, audio recorder, digital camera etc)
  • Photojournalism experience
