Abuja Writers Forum's May Guest Writer: Dike-Ogu Chukwumerije (Nigeria)

Date: 25 May 2013

We are pleased to announce our guest author for May, 2013.

Mr. Dike-Ogu Chukwumerije is a Master of the Spoken Word, Slam Champion and winner of the maiden edition of The African Poet Nigeria (TAPng) National Poetry Slam Competition.

Dike is a literary advocate, dedicated social activist and part of the 100Thousand Poets for Change in Abuja-Nigeria. His passion for change finds expression in his works. He has published several books, including the highly acclaimed poetry collection, "The Revolution Has No Tribe: Contemporary Poetry on African History, Culture and Society". One of his novels, "The African American", was long listed for the 2012 Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature.

His current book is titled; 'Urichindere' described as so funny you could get a headache from laughing too much. It's set in the 1990s and unveils the hilarious world of the typical Nigerian boarding school.

Do you know what "kpako flakes" is? Or what it means to be a "dining hall ninja"? Did you ever "jump fence"? Or hide in the ceiling to avoid a wicked Prefect? Let's not even start asking about love, and how chocolates and cards were smuggled in and out of schools. But the 1990s were also dangerous, treacherous times. Nigeria was a country in turmoil, with decades of military dictatorship clashing with a rising demand for democracy. This is the world in which Urichindere, a young student in an elite secondary school in Lagos, is growing up . He befriends the charismatic Mac Jimmy, makes an enemy of Temlong, and discovers love and heartbreak along the way. But all the time his world is being threatened by wider socio-political events. Soon, his activist Uncle drags him and his entire family into the very heart of the swirling storm. And, there, Urichindere finds his deepest relationships severely tested.

With Dike Chukwumerije, you need no other to be motivated to take your interest in reading and writing to the next level. Come join us as we host one of the best around.
