Vacancy: Assistant Professor of Arabic, University of Wisconsin

Principal duties:

Assistant Professor, tenure-track, beginning in August 2011. The teaching load for our department is approximately two courses per semester, with variable TA supervision responsibilities depending on the courses taught. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct a scholarly research program and meet other requirements so as to merit tenure at or before the end of his or her probationary period. University and community service will be expected as appropriate. The successful candidate will also be expected to fulfill other responsibilities commensurate with a faculty position on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

Additional Information:

Candidates must be able to teach Modern Standard/Classical Arabic at all levels; have native or near-native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic and familiarity with at least one spoken dialect; have knowledge of the hisotircal development of Arabic, of Islamic civilization, and of Arabic-based cultures of Africa; and be competent in linguistic approaches to literature. Desired additional competencies: an ability to develop innovative teaching materials, particularily materials that incorporate various technologies to best effect; familiarity with current theories; an ability to teach in areas of Arabic literature in translation, literary criticism, classical approaches to Arabic grammar, and/or the linguistic structure of Arabic.
