Cordite Books Fiction Prize | $1,000 top prize | Africa-wide

Cordite Books, an imprint of Lagos, Nigeria based Parrésia Publishers Ltd, is calling on African writers of quality Crime Fiction to submit manuscripts. The winning manuscript will be published by Cordite Books and will receive a US$1,000 prize. Edited by award winning author, Helon Habila, Cordite intends to tap into a growing market for spy and crime fiction in Africa.

Submissions are welcome from published or unpublished authors; submission must be in the crime fiction genre; by an African author; set at least partly in Africa and be between sixty to eighty thousand words in length. Winners will be selected by the Editor. In addition to a publishing contract, the winning manuscript will get a cash prize of $1,000 [covering an advance on royalties]. Two runners-up will get cash prizes.

Submissions are open from August 7th, 2013 and will close on November 30th, 2013. The winning manuscript will be published mid 2014 and will be available all across Africa. Submissions should be uploaded using the submissions manager on the Cordite Books website only. Please read the Submissions Guidelines.

CRITERIA:

• African is defined as a citizen of the 53 countries in the continent of Africa and adjoining island, including descendants of such citizens who hold valid African passports.

‘Developments in African Film, Television and Screen’

The camera lens holds a potent symbolic weight within colonial and postcolonial Africa. With a history of being captured and often exploited on celluloid, the continent is now becoming a dynamic site of local cinematic representation and production. In both form and content, Africa’s television and film industry has boomed to allow for myriad creative, popular and political stories to reach local audiences – whether the context is a television set within the domestic home, a large scale projection at Burkina Faso’s Fespaco Festival, a makeshift movie house in a backyard, or a computer. Nollywood has come to define a new era of mass filmmaking and distribution, giving rise to a whole generation of rapidly produced and consumed movies across the continent. Changing technologies are allowing for more experimentation and access, as well as better quality and delivery in multiple genres of the screen. And, increasing demand for material from both within and without the continent is challenging African writers, producers and directors to develop original and exciting projects, for both local and wider audiences.

Responding to this vital climate, postamble invites you to submit academic papers, film and book reviews, interviews and photographic essays for consideration for the upcoming edition: ‘Developments in African Film, Television and Screen’.

We welcome, but are not limited to, submissions which examine more established genres of the screen – documentary, cinema and television (drama, news broadcasting, music videos, series) – as well more specialised areas like visual anthropology, video/film art and web-based broadcasts and programmes. We are excited to receive work with examines the less visible phenomena of the industry: such as its aesthetics, languages and discourses; intersections between culture and politics in form, method and reception; questions around the image as a commodity; the relationships between production/’text’/audience; the tensions between contemporary and historical screen representations and narratives of Africa, and so on. We are also interested in submissions which interrogate the more practical roles and functions within or of the industry – a few examples: local screening and audience practices; the figure of the African film maker; production logistics; rules of celebrity; actors and performance; patterns in investment, distribution, production; skills training and future developments.

5th Annual Golden Baobab Prize | $1,000 top prize | Africa-wide

It’s a pleasure to announce the ongoing fifth annual Golden Baobab Prize, a literary award that invites entries of unpublished African-inspired stories written for young audiences below the age of twelve! As you already, the mission of the Golden Baobab Prize is to inspire African writers to create enthralling African stories that will inspire the imaginations of generations of African children.

This year, Golden Baobab will award three prizes:

• The Picture Book Prize awards $1,000 to the best story written for readers ages 6-8;
• The Early Chapter Book Prize awards $1,000 to the best story written for readers ages 9-11;
• The Rising Writer Prize awards $1,000 to the most promising young writer below the age of 18.

This year’s prize packages include a publishing deal and opportunities to attend exclusive Golden Baobab writers’ workshops. Additional rules and regulations can be found on our website. RULES AND REGULATIONS:

• Stories must be submitted with a completed Rising Writer Personal Profile Form which is a word document saved as “Your Last Name_Rising Writer Personal Profile”. The form should answer the following questions designed to inform us how well you fit the criteria for the Rising Writer Prize. Your answers may be used for promotional purposes upon the conclusion of judging. The questions are:

GENERAL (FOR ALL 3 PRIZES):

• There are no restrictions on theme, but stories must be set in Africa or have a very evident African content and should be designed to enthrall and captivate African children.
• Submissions must be in English.
• Submissions must be made under an author’s legal name, as it is written on his or her passport or other identification. Additionally, he or she may indicate a desire for the story to be represented under a pseudonym.
• Previous entrants of the Prize are eligible to enter in subsequent years. Past winners of the Prize are ineligible to enter in subsequent years.
• All entries must be the unaided work of the entrant and all exclusive rights to the story should be the sole property of the author at the time of submission to the Golden Baobab Prize.
• Submissions must be previously unpublished anywhere in part or in full.
• Each story should have a title page stating: the title of story and prize to which story is being submitted. Do not include the author's name on the title page. All biographical information should be submitted through our online submission system.
• Stories should be submitted as a word document in .doc or .docx format. Do not submit PDFs.
• Once winners are announced, all rights to winning and shortlisted stories must be exclusively available for publication with Golden Baobab's publishing partners. After one calendar year if Golden Baobab has not pursued a story for publication, entrants are welcome to give the rights of the story to other interested parties. Applications are invited for the following three positions at Politikon: South African Journal of Political Studies (Routledge) Editor, Assistant Editor and Book Review Editor.

(Note that there is no requirement for members of the editorial team to either be African, South African, or to be based in Africa).

Politikon is the official academic journal of the South African Association of Political Studies (SAAPS), the professional body for South African political scientists. The journal appears three times per year and has a broad focus on issues of Political Studies and IR relevant for all developing regions of the world.

Applicants should submit a comprehensive CV indicating experience with editorial boards, editing academic journals and/or book reviews.

Period of appointment will be from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2015.

Editors will receive an honorarium for their work. Editors will have to become members of SAAPS if they are not already members.

REQUIREMENTS:

Editor:

PhD in Political Science or related social science field, a strong publication record, and experience of editing and guest editing academic articles for journal publication, are basic requirements. An NRF Rating will be advantageous. Knowledge of the academic publishing environment will be an asset. The editor will have the following responsibilities regarding the publishing processes:

Ensure academic quality and currency of the journal; maintain and increase the international stature of the journal through inclusion in journal indices, databases and aggregators; plan and supervise the production of a theme-based special issue every year; solicit and vet scholarly submissions; determine two peer reviewers for each article; oversee the processes of revisions based on reviewer feedback; follow strict time lines for the production of three issues per year; submit feedback in the form of quarterly reports to the SAAPS Council.

Assistant Editor:

At least an MA in Political Science or related social science field with a publication record and experience of editing academic articles for journal publication. Knowledge of electronic software programmes for the use in editing is a necessity.

The assistant editor will share the workload with the editor and help with follow-ups throughout the processes of editing and publication.

Book Review Editor

MA in Political Science with experience of editing academic book reviews. Knowledge and interest in a broad range of Political Studies issue areas and new titles will be an asset.
Responsibilities will include procuring new titles from academic publishers, identifying reviewers, distributing books to interested reviewers, ensuring the timely delivery of reviews, and editing the book reviews.

Call for Applications: 5th Femrite Regional Residency for Women Writers (covers return air tickets, accommodation | Africa-wide)

FEMRITE announces the call for submissions for the 5th Residency for African Women Writers which will be held from 18th to 30th November 2013. The main aim of the residency is to give women, mental and physical space to write.

The 2-week residency will give selected writers the opportunity to reflect on their writing, connect with one another, read each others’ manuscripts and give feedback, interact with established writers and build literary bridges across cultures of the continent. The residency is also aimed at strengthening collaboration among women writers’ initiatives in Africa.

HOW TO SUBMIT:

• Send part of a novel / short Story collection as a word document (40 pages, typed in Times New Roman, font 12, 1.5 spacing).
• Send one complete short story (Minimum 3000 words) for the 5th Regional Residency publication.

Call for Poems in Two Languages for an African Festival in Colombia

Geo Ripley, director of an African festival celebrated in Colombia, is seeking poems about drums types, color skin, slavery, ancestral Gods, freedom, etc. to be presented during the Colombian Drum Festival at Cartagena de Indias. Geo Ripley works in the Dominican cultural environment. He is an internationally famous folklore professor and painter trying to preserve African Culture in Latin America.

Poems should be at least in two languages (your native language and English or French) depending on your possibility. The poems are to be turned into a worldwide anthology depending on the compilation and poems will be translated into the Colombian African natives’ dialect.

New Partnership for Africa’s Development Essay Contest (R20,000 top prize/ est $3,300 | Africa-wide)

The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Planning and Coordinating Agency (hereinafter referred to as the “NEPAD Agency”) and the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation ACP - EU (hereinafter referred to as “CTA”) have joined forces in celebrating 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). It is within this context of Pan Africanism and African Renaissance, which is this year’s AU Summit theme that the NEPAD Agency and CTA are jointly organising a Photo and Essay Contest which will from April 2 to May 10, 2013.

The Contest will focus on Youth, Women and Rural Agricultural Development. Photo (hereinafter referred to the “Photo” or the “Photos”) entries will depict what NEPAD Agency and its partners are doing in empowering rural youth and women in agriculture.

The Photos and Essays can make reference to NEPAD Programmes and Projects where youth development is directly and indirectly involved such as Gender, Food and Nutrition Security, the School Feeding scheme CAADP and Climate Change.

ENTRY CATEGORIES:

• Amateur category (Photo): 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for best Photo depicting the theme and title of contest.
• Essay category: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize for best written essay on NEPAD and rural empowerment through agriculture of youth and women.

• 1st place: R 20 000 and a Digital Camera

The winning Photos and Essays might also be displayed at the special African Union’s 50th Anniversary Summit in Addis Ababa and during the Africa Week on NEPAD during the United Nations General Assembly in September 2013, in New York, when world leaders will meet to recommit and redouble their efforts in the fight extreme poverty, uses expressly acknowledged and agreed by each entrant/contestant.

The winning Photos will be printed into posters and branded with the NEPAD logo and tagline for used at NEPAD Agency all events and public engagements, whatever their nature and duration, whenever and wherever they shall take place in the world.

ELIGIBILITY:

• The Contest is open to all youth aged 13 to 35, who are citizens of African Union Member States, with no restrictions on gender. Minors are responsible for ensuring their submission is in compliance with the legal requirements of their country (hereinafter referred to as the “Contestant” or the “Contestants”).
• Photos must have been taken in the past six months, i.e., not before November 2012
• The Essay cannot be more than 1 page;
• Entry is free of charge.
• All entries not respecting the theme or the technical/authorship requirements set out below will be systematically ruled out.
• Staff members, including immediate family members, working for NEPAD Agency, the African Union, CTA including other partners and sponsors of this competition are not qualified to participate in the contest.

SUBMISSION RULES:

• There will be two categories of contestants: a) amateur (photo) and b) essay.
• Contestants may enter either as amateurs (photo) or essay, but not both.
• The Photos should be a vertical shot for purposes of turning it into a poster.
• Only images not yet published may be submitted. Photographers can publish their photos after the contest results are announced in May, 2013
• Photos entered will not be returned to contestants and will be used in the NEPAD Agency publications and website.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

All photo entries must provide images with the following specifications.

• Image data files created with digital still cameras (including medium and large-format cameras).
• File format: JPEG
• File size per JPEG: more than 1500 x 2100 pixels/more than 150dpi/up to a minimum 2MB
• Photo files can be submitted in the following formats: JPEG, PNG and GIF.
• No Photo should be digitally altered or enhanced except for basic cropping or colour correction. The content and context of the image should in no way be altered or enhanced.
• Each image that is sent should include the following information:
• Full name and contact details of Contestant; location of Photo; date Photo was taken; include a caption of the Photo(s), and the full name of the person/people with their image captured in the Photo(s).
• The information must be repeated on the entry form.

Note: Winners may be requested to provide higher resolution images for publication or display purposes related to the Contest.

All Essay entries should include the following documents:

• The Essay in word format; a cover page will be included and on this page, the category for which the Essay is submitted must be clearly indicated;

INDEMNITY:

• NEPAD Agency is not responsible for any damage or loss that may occur during the sending of entries via the Internet.
• NEPAD Agency is not responsible for any problems or damages experienced by the Contestant due to forces beyond the control of the Agency, such as but not limited to troubles relating to computer networks, computer virus infections or unauthorized computer access.
• During the performance of the Photo shoots or the writing of the Essay, each Contestant shall have strictly complied with the laws and regulations in force in the country where the Photo(s) was/were taken or the Essay(s) was/were written; and more especially the laws and regulations in force related to the Intellectual Property Rights.
• Contestants must possess the exclusive intellectual property rights to each of its entered work (i.e. the Photo(s) and the Essay(s)) and are responsible for having obtained any necessary permissions relating to the subject/subject matter. NEPAD Agency will not be responsible for any claims or complaints against infringement of rights or damages from third parties relating to the subject/subject matter of entries, and the Contestant agrees to indemnify and hold NEPAD Agency harmless in such cases.
• A Photo which displays an identified or identifiable person(s) may infringe on such person’s right of privacy or may disclose such person’s personal information. Contestants shall have taken all the necessary actions to avoid any infringement of personal rights, including the rights to image from the person captured in the Photos. Thus all Contestants are deemed responsible to have formally obtained from such person(s) all necessary permissions and assignments of all rights) to use their image(s) by the NEPAD Agency and CTA, for an unlimited duration, for the whole world, for all forms, supports and media limitless in terms of number

COPYRIGHT:

• Photos submitted for the Contest shall include the names and contact information of all people shown therein. Minors – meaning children under the age of 18 years – shall have the signed approval of their parent(s) or guardian(s) before being photographed. Contestants must attach the signed release form from parent(s) or guardian(s) with their entries. This form will be provided on the website and other platforms when the Contest is advertised. The signed release shall.
• Alternatively, Contestants should submit a declaration bearing responsibility for the subject and subject matter in the Photos as well as express warranties that all the third parties involved such as the persons with their image captured in the Photos have expressly authorized the use of their image and assigned in full, the intellectual rights attached to their image.

Wasafiri is an international literary magazine that provides consistent coverage to Britain's diverse cultural heritage and publishes a range of diasporic and migrant writing worldwide. Since its inception in 1984, it has focused on writing as a form of cultural travelling (Wasafiri is Kiswahili for 'travellers') and extended the boundaries of literary culture.

NEW WRITING PRIZE 2013

Renowned worldwide for featuring some of the best and brightest new talent, Wasafiri launched an annual New Writing Prize as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations in 2009. Since Wasafiri was first published in 1984, it has consistently aimed to shift the contours of established literary canons and remapped the borders of international contemporary writing, creating new imaginative spaces and publishing some of the most promising new literary voices. In the words of acclaimed author Aminatta Forna, ‘In a world which gives voice only to the few, Wasafiri comes to us like a choir of thousands singing the stories of everywhere.’

HOW TO ENTER:

The competition is open to anyone worldwide who has not published a complete book. We are looking for creative submissions in one of three categories: Poetry, Fiction or Life Writing. Simply fill in the entry form and send it to us with your entry and fee of UK Sterling £6.00 if entering one category, £10.00 for two and £15.00 for three categories. The closing date is 5pm GMT on 26 July 2013. Entrants who are visually impaired or who are prevented from typing through disability can enter work on audio CD.

To mark World Press Freedom Day on May 3, Doha Centre for Media Freedom has organised its inaugural "DCMF World Press Freedom Cartoon Contest." The centre is looking forward to receiving cartoons from artists all over the world, depicting the theme of “Media Freedom.”

May 3 was declared World Press Freedom Day by the UN General Assembly In 1993, and each year it serves as a reminder of the difficulties faced by journalists and members of the media around the world.

Cartoons can often express stories, news and opinions more clearly than words, and at times of conflict, cartoonists and artists are regularly among the first to be silenced.

For World Press Freedom Day in 2013, Doha Centre for Media Freedom would like to honour the bravery and creativity of courageous cartoonists and journalists who use their work to battle against restrictions imposed on the media and society in general.

DCMF has launched its inaugural “DCMF World Press Freedom Cartoon Competition,” and looks forward to seeing how cartoonists around the world depict issues related to media freedom.

CRITERIA FOR ENTRANTS:

• The theme of this competition is “Media Freedom.” The cartoons should capture any major events related to media freedom in 2012-2013. Suggested topics include censorship issues, crackdowns on media outlets and attacks against journalists, etc.
• This competition is open to all cartoonists from all over the world. Participants must be aged 18 and over.
• Each participant can contribute only one cartoon to the competition.
• Any text written on the cartoon should be translated into English or Arabic.
• Cartoons can be either black and white or in colour.
• Only original work will be accepted.
• All submissions must include the name, email address, telephone number and a brief biography of the cartoonist.
• Only still cartoons will be accepted.

The LTI Translation Academy offers various courses for prospective translators of Korean literature from around the world. The Intensive Course is a year-long curriculum composed of translation workshops, Korean language classes, and lectures on Korean culture and literature. We are looking for qualified applicants that will rise to the challenge of translating Korean literature, thereby contributing to the expansion of its global readership.

LTI TRANSLATION ACADEMY FELLOWSHIP

The LTI Translation Academy Fellowship is open to overseas applicants whose native language is one of the following five languages (English, French, German, Russian, or Spanish). Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960) was an anthropologist, a novelist, a folklorist, a playwright, and a history maker in her own right. Hurston was a product of the Harlem Renaissance and is often described as one of the greatest literary artists of the twentieth century. Praised by many for her studies of African derived religions in the American South, Haiti, and Jamaica, she is most famous for her 1937 novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and her literary works inspired such writers as Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Ishmael Reed, Gloria Naylor, and Jewell Parker Rhodes, among others. Call for Papers: Journal of Language Studies (Covenant University Press, Nigeria | worldwide)

JLS is an international scholarly open access journal that provides a forum devoted to current and state of the art studies in Language and Communication. It is a fully refereed journal, focusing both on conceptual and theoretical approaches to Language and Communication studies. Submissions that deal with case studies and essays demonstrating new knowledge and advanced methods providing heightened scholarly understanding of traditional topics in English and French linguistics or literary studies, pragmatics, discourse studies and (new) media communications are particularly welcome. The journal also encourages descriptive and highly objective reviews.

The journal aims to maintain rapid editorial procedures and a rigorous peer review system. Submitted articles are reviewed within approximately three months of submission and the accepted articles are published shortly afterwards. JLS is published twice a year (June & December), both electronically as well as in printed form by Covenant University Press, Canaanland, Ota, Nigeria.

The editors of Journal of Language Studies (JLS) call for well-researched articles written in English or French. Please ensure that your submission is the final clean version of the manuscript with all accompanying files (if applicable). Also indicate that the manuscript is an original paper, not previously published or is being considered for publication in another journal. Please see a detailed ‘guide for authors’ on our Covenant Journals page.

• A manuscript should not exceed 8,000 words including the abstract, endnotes and references.
• A manuscript should include a concise abstract of about 150 words. The abstract should state briefly the purpose of the paper, major results and conclusions.
• A title page should include author(s) names and affiliations, and a brief biographical note of about 100 words.
• JLS adopts the Harvard (or APA) referencing style.
• All submissions will be peer-reviewed.
• Manuscripts are to be submitted electronically.
