The Role
Bloomberg News is seeking an editor to join our News Data team in our Johannesburg office to expand current and build new data coverage of economics, commodities and energy on the African continent. The person in this role will extract data from various sources under real-time deadline pressure and will survey economists ahead of indicators to gauge and set market expectations. The candidate will need to be fast and accurate in taking data and turning it into table-based stories for our clients, working closely with reporters and editors to help with our news coverage.
There is also an analytical aspect to the role where the candidate will be expected to contribute ideas for charts and stories and "connect the dots" on various points of data.
The ideal candidate will have an education in economics or finance, Excel proficiency including VBA and the ability to work under deadline pressure.
Qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is essential
-Experience covering or working with economic indicators and financial data.
-Understanding of economics to determine what data releases are important enough to cover and what data within those releases should be emphasized
-Fluency in written and spoken English is essential
-Ability to write introductions and headlines for economic data tables in English.
-Ability to use Excel spreadsheets is essential; knowledge of VBA is a must.
-Experience working in a real-time news environment is a plus
-Creative and analytical thinking
-French language skills an advantage
