DRUM has a vacancy for a skilled and experienced News Editor in its Johannesburg office.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reporting to the Editor, the successful incumbent of this key position will:
- Assist with the management of news content and production of the magazine
- Conceptualise, oversee and co-ordinate content
- Generate news ideas in line with the DRUM formula and focus using initiative, creativity and imagination.
- Mentor and manage writers including briefing and debriefing and ensuring copy is accurate, of the highest quality and in keeping with DRUM style, flow and tone
- Do final proofreading of features and other pages when required
- Manage deadlines
JOB REQUIREMENTS (Knowledge, skills, experience)
To successfully carry out these tasks the candidate must have the following skills and characteristics:
- A tertiary qualification in languages, journalism or related profession and at least five years' relevant experience in an editorial environment
- Well developed verbal and written communication skills
- The ability to make sound and quick decisions
- A passion for media and special interest and wide knowledge of current affairs
- The ability to work under pressure
- Well-developed planning and organisational skills
- The ability to effectively manage people and processes
- The ability to work as part of a team
- The ability to think laterally and creatively
- Proven feature-writing and copy editing skills
- A sound editorial knowledge
