MTN Ghana Foundation Essay Competition (prize: GHc100,000 worth of scholarships)

MTN Ghana Foundation at a brief ceremony today announced scholarships totalling GH¢ 100,000.00 to be awarded to 10 pre-tertiary students. The merit awards form part of the package to acknowledge subscribers for their loyalty to the MTN brand following MTN’s 10 million subscriber milestone attained recently.

The awards aim at supporting the education of 10 brilliant and needy students across the country while encouraging improved essay writing skills among tertiary institution students. They also affirm the Foundation’s commitment to support education and other life enriching projects in all the 10 regions of Ghana. The beneficiaries will be selected through an essay writing competition and other assessment procedures.

MTN Ghana Foundation will organize a nationwide essay competition from 23rd May to 16th June, to select students who will enjoy full academic scholarships through their tertiary education in selected institutions. The entrants must be between the ages of 18 and 25 years of age and must be pre-tertiary students who have applied for admission in any of the selected institutions.

One winner will be chosen from each of the 10 regions of Ghana and will benefit from a financial aid of GH¢ 10,000.00 in support of his or her education. A panel of seasoned judges will review the entries and determine the winners. The announcement of the winners will be made at a ceremony in August 2012.

MTN Ghana Foundation, the CSR arm of MTN Ghana is the vehicle for undertaking corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in support of communities around the country. Since its establishment in 2007, the MTN Ghana Foundation has invested about 7 million Ghana cedis into community development projects. Education has been one of the focus areas of MTN’s CSR activities. In addition to putting up 12 school blocks for about 12 communities, 15 ICT Centres are being set up by the Foundation across the country. Some health projects implemented include support to the Korle Bu Maternity Block, the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital and the provision of medical equipment to Kotokuom, Shama, Atebie and KNUST Government hospitals.

GUIEDLINES

• Open to 18 - 25 year old Ghanaian students about to enter any public tertiary institution.

• Topic: “How to manage refuse in Ghana while motivating citizens to keep their environment clean".

• Must be hand-written with blue ink, on foolscap sheets, up to a 1,000 words.

• Applicants to enclose short bio-data of themselves.

• Deadline for submission -15th June 2012 @ 5:00pm.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

1. DEFINITIONS:

The following terms will have the specific meanings assigned thereto in these Terms and Conditions.

Prizes: means any or each of the ten
  • GHc10,000.00 Worth of Tertiary Institution Scholarship
  • One Winner per each Region of Ghana.

Time of Competition: means period beginning on 08:00:00 (GMT) May 24, 2012 and ending on 17:00:00 (GMT) June 15, 2012;

Beginning Date/ Time (Beginning): means 08:00:00 (GMT) May 24, 2012;

Finish Date/ Time (Finish): means 17:00:00 (GMT) June 15, 2012;

Terms and Conditions: means these Terms and Conditions, including all the amendments thereof;

Confirmed Prize Winner: means the Participant who as the Winner under these Terms and Conditions and has been confirmed by the MTN Ghana Foundation to be entitled to receive the Prize and who has accepted the Prize;

Participant: means, unless otherwise expressly provided herein, a Ghanaian citizen of 18-25 years of age and resident in Ghana is permitted by these Terms and Conditions to participate in the Competition;

Step: means one of a pre-defined number of activities as described in these Terms and Conditions;

2. THE ORGANIZER

2.1 The Competition is organized by MTN Ghana Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of Scancom Limited (MTN) (hereinafter referred to as “the Organizer”).

2.2 The present Terms and Conditions apply to participation of all the Participants in the Competition. During the Time of Competition, these Terms and Conditions are available free to all the Participants at www.mtn.com.gh (“Competition Website”) and may be subject to amendments in accordance with these Terms and Conditions.

3. PURPOSE & TERRITORY

3.1 The Competition is being organised by the MTN Ghana Foundation in celebration of the MTN’s 10 million subscriber milestone to provide financial aid for 10 students, one in each Region of Ghana, to assist them to pursue courses in selected public tertiary institutions located in the 10 regions of Ghana. 3.2 Objectives of the Competition: • To support the education of 10 brilliant but needy students. • To reiterate the Foundation’s commitment to tertiary education and other social enhancing CSR projects in the 10 regions of Ghana. • Initiate competitive essay writing among tertiary institution students.

3.2 The Competition is open to Ghanaian citizens who are resident in Ghana.

4. PARTICIPANTS

4.1 Subject to meeting all terms and conditions set out herein, all Ghanaian individuals, residents of Ghana, over 18-25 years old who are in a second cycle institution are eligible to participate.

4.2 Employees of Scancom Limited (MTN), MTN Ghana Foundation, the Judges and their immediate family members are not eligible to enter.

4.3 By sending an Essay Participants undertake and commit to abide by all the Terms and Conditions with no exceptions.

5. COMPETITION

5.1 The Competition is Essay writing.

5.2 Other tests to be based on Participants’ knowledge and skills, in which the Participants will undergo various quantitative, verbal and aptitude evaluations.

6. ESSAY SUBMISSION

6.1 The essay submitted shall be:
  • Hand written (in blue ink) on a foolscap sheet.
  • The Essay shall not be more than 1,000 words.

6.2 The Participant shall submit his/her Essay in a Region where he/she resides or his/her school is located.

6.3 The Participant shall enclose his/her personal details: full name with Surname clearly underlined, postal address, date of birth, secondary school attended, residential address, telephone number and e-mail (if any).

6.4 The Participant shall submit one passport picture.

6.5 Participants shall submit a photocopy of an identification card of themselves.

6.6 Participants shall enclose their WASSCE result.

6.7 Participants should have applied to any of the 10 pre-selected public tertiary institutions in Ghana listed below.

6.8 Preference may be given to students in the sciences and technology fields.

7. PERIODS OF COMPETITION

7.1 The Competition shall have the following deadlines subject only to amendment in accordance with these Terms and Conditions:

  • Submission: Entries must be submitted at any MTN branch, Connect Store, or Office across the country or 12th Floor, Ridge Towers, Accra from 8am to 5pm. or posted to: MTN 10 Million Subscriber Merit Essay Competition, MTN Ghana Foundation, P.O. Box TF 281, Trade Fair, La, Accra.
  • Deadline for Submission: 15th June, 2012
  • Announcement of winners: 17th August, 2012
  • Awards ceremony: 30th August, 2012

8. PRIZES

8.1 The prizes do not include other products or services apart from the prizes specified in these Terms and Conditions

8.2 The prize cannot be exchanged by the participant for their equivalent in money or other products or service.

8.3 The prize cannot be transferred to a third party.

9. WINNING MECHANISM AND SELECTING THE WINNERS

9.1 Winners shall be selected based on Participant:
  • Fulfilling all the Terms and Conditions herein.
  • Meeting merit criteria set for each Stage of the Competition.
  • Meeting the performance criteria in the essay writing and interview.
  • Finishing first in rank for his region of participation.

10. AWARDING & CONFIRMING THE WINNER PRIZES

10.1 All Finalists shall make themselves available for the Award Ceremony.

10.2 The Prizes shall be collected by the Prize Winners in person unless exempted by the Organiser, subject to fulfilment of the following conditions:
  • the delivery of a completed and correctly filled Prize Acceptance Form;
  • provision of sufficient identification by way of the proof of identity;

10.3 If the Prize Winner or the Confirmed Prize Winner is disqualified in accordance with these Terms and Conditions, the Prize shall be awarded to the participant next in line on merit according to these Terms and Conditions.

11. GENERAL CONDITIONS

11.1 Participants shall not be a party to any agreement with a talent agent or manager.

11.2 The Competition is open only to Ghanaians who are resident in Ghana. Overseas entries and entries by non-Ghanaians will not be considered.

11.3 Only one entry per person shall be accepted. Multiple entrants shall be disqualified

11.4 Only original hand written scripts shall be considered.

11.5 Entries which infringe any copyrights or other third party rights shall be disqualified.

11.6 By entering the Competition, the contestant agrees to indemnify and hold MTN and MTN Ghana Foundation harmless from and against any legal claims.

11.7 An Essay of more than 1,000 words shall be disqualified.

11.8 It is the sole responsibility of Participants to ensure that the submitted Essay is complete and legible.

11.9 Submitted materials shall not be returned to the contestant. MTN and MTN Ghana Foundation shall not be responsible for late, lost, damaged, misdirected, postage due, stolen, or misappropriated entries.

11.10 Entries shall be screened by the Organiser and the entries that qualify for the semi-finals will be sent to a panel of judges who will select the 10 Winners.

11.11 The judging committee will consist of members, including but not limited to academia and educationists.

11.12 Essays shall be judged on originality, quality of script, grammar and clarity of thoughts and ideas.

11.13 Participants shall not be given feedback or a critique on the Essay they submit.

11.14 Each finalist will be notified by email or phone and announced in the media.

11.15 Each Participant shall sign a Release Form.

11.16 Should a Participant’s Essay be selected as a top 20 semi finalist, he or she agrees that MTN shall have the right to include the Essay(s) on MTN Essay compilation to be used for promotional purposes.

11.17 The Participant understands that all Essays entered may be distributed to judges selecting the top 20 semi finalists and Prize winners, and agrees to release, indemnify, and hold MTN and judges harmless for liability, damages, or claims for injury or loss to any person or property
relating to, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, participation in the competition.

11.18 By entering the Competition, participants agree to accept and be bound by the decisions of MTN and its judges, which shall be final and binding in all matters.

11.19 MTN reserves the right to cancel this competition at any stage if deemed necessary in its sole opinion or if circumstances arise outside of its control.

11.20 Participants shall be deemed to have accepted these rules and to agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions.

11.21 The Organiser may extend the deadline for the submission for entries if the Organiser deems it necessary in its sole opinion to do so.

11.22 Students who have enrolled in a tertiary institution before the start date of this Competition are disqualified from participating in the Competition.
