The Nordic Africa Institute, which encourages research and studies on Africa in the Nordic countries, invites applications for a number of one-month scholarships to facilitate use of the Institute’s library. The scholarships cover travel expenses to and from Uppsala and include a shared office and free accommodation at Gästhem Samariten, centrally located in Uppsala.
WHO CAN APPLY? Students pursuing Africa-oriented studies at universities and colleges in the Nordic countries are eligible candidates for these scholarships, regardless of citizenship. A basic academic degree (Bachelor’s degree) is required. The scholarships are also intended for Africa-oriented journalists and textbook writers.
THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY SCHOLARSHIPS: The primary purpose of the scholarships is to offer the scholarship holders a one-month stay at the Nordic Africa Institute in order to facilitate use of the Institute’s large library collections on contemporary Africa (books, periodicals, newspapers, and government publications). The scholarship holders have also access to the Uppsala University Library, including the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, and the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND OTHER BENEFITS: The scholarships cover travelling expenses for the least expensive fare from residential address in a Nordic country to Uppsala and return. The scholarship holders are provided with a desk and computer in a shared office and free accommodation at Gästhem Samariten,a centrally located hostel in Uppsala. The scholarships also include a subsistence allowance of SEK 150 per day and free photocopying up to a maximum of 1,000 copies.
Please note: The Study Scholarships do not include health care insurance or other insurances.
APPLICATION DATE: The study scholarships are awarded once per year and the applications must be in by 1 October (for the spring and autumn semester of coming year).

N.B. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Duration of spring and autumn semester: The spring semester of the Study Scholarship programme runs from 15 January to 14 July, and the autumn semester from 15 August to 14 December.
The Study Scholarship “months”: The one-month scholarship periods (“months”) run from the 15th of one month to the 14 of the following month (e.g. 15 Jan. - 14 Feb., 15 Oct. - 14 Nov.). The scholarship holders are expected to arrive on the first workday (Monday - Friday) of their one-month period.
A. APPLICATION FORM
The application form should be submitted in 2 copies and written in English. The application form should include:
Personal data: Name, sex, place and date of birth, academic discipline, citizenship, residential address, and address of department at university or college (where the applicant is registered) or professional address.

• Project title
• Short summary of project
• Purpose of the project (for students: degree or certificate after completed project; for journalists and autors of textbooks: article(s) or book)
Details about Visit to the Institute
• Preferred one-month period, e.g. 15 Jan. - 14 Feb. or 15 Oct. - 14 Nov.
• An estimate of travel expenses, the least expensive fare from the place of residence in a Nordic country to Uppsala and return.
• Expectations of the visit at the Nordic Africa Institute.
References: Applications must include name and address of supervisor at the university/college where the applicant is registered. Journalists and authors of textbooks must submit name and address of a referee. All applications must be supported by at least one written reference, which should be sent separately to the Nordic Africa Institute by the supervisor and/or the referee(s), and arrive at the Institute by 15 October.
B. DETAILED PLAN OF THE PROJECT
In addition to the application form, a project proposal should be submitted in 2 copies. The project proposal should be written in English. The length should be between 3–5 pages (Word dokument, Times or New Roman fonts at 1,5 line spacing; 5 pages is the absolute maximum). Applications are primarily evaluated on the basis of the project proposal.
The following details should be included:
- The objective of the project
- The research topic should be clearly identified and contextualised within its academic discipline.
Method and time frame: Describe how the project will be accomplished. State the research method, data gathering techniques and time frame. A brief indication of the theoretical basis of the project must be included.
Why the Nordic Africa Institue? Explain how the use of the library at the Nordic Africa Institute will further the project.
