Partial Grants Available for Journalists: Info-Activism Camp 2013 in Italy

Deadline: 2 April 2013

How do you think activists will safely process and manage video footage from conflicts around the world? You have great experiences to share from an amazing visual advocacy campaign you worked on. As an investigative journalist you're trying to figure out how to collate and present all the data you have into an exposé. Your mapping project is stuck and needs to move to the next level.

If any of this strikes a chord with you, then we think you should apply to Tactical Tech's Info-Activism Camp 2013 'Evidence & Influence'.

At Tactical Tech, we have been documenting and learning about how the exciting field of information activism is evolving and how it can be used to achieve social justice. The Evidence & Influence Camp will bring together people working with data, technology, visual design and advocacy to shape the practice of evidence-based advocacy. The camp is both a peer-learning event and a space that will foster collaboration. We will explore new ideas that will contribute to enhancing creative & technical practices and deepening critical debates in this field.

We are now open for applications.

1. WHAT YOU'RE SIGNING UP FOR:

Six days of discussion, hands-on learning, skillshares and collaborations. There will be very little lecturing or presentations. Participants are expected to bring their experiences, knowledge and skills to share with others at camp. We will be in session for 7-8 hours a day with free time in the afternoon and optional organised activities in the evenings. You will need to be free for the entire period 23 – 30 June in order to attend. It is not possible to come for a portion of it. Please note that this event will be in English.

2. YOUR INFORMATION AND PRIVACY:

We will use information only for the process of selecting participants for the camp and for our evaluation requirements. We will not give it to any external service or organisation. It will be handled and stored securely. All data collected through this webform is safely transmitted and stored using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and AES-256 bit encryption. If you would prefer to submit the application form through GPG encrypted email then download the form and public key and send it to campapplications[at]tacticaltech[dot]org.

We have a limited number of places open for applications and already a lot of interest. The selection of applicants for the camp will be vetted and reviewed by an external advisory board. The profile of the advisory board will be shared on the camp website.

4. WHO SHOULD APPLY:

You should consider applying to the camp if you are:
  • An activist, investigative journalist, lawyer, campaigner, organiser, digital media activist, data journalist or rights advocate working with data or information for social change. This means that you are either ready to work on – or are already working on – an information-based or visual advocacy project.
  • Working with data as a data specialist, data wrangler or statistician working with advocacy groups / activists, or would like to share your skills with such groups.
  • A developer or technologist working with advocacy groups / activists
  • An information designer, graphic designer, animation filmmaker, video filmmaker or other digital media practitioner interested in or already working on social justice and rights issues and groups
  • An artist working with information and on political themes

April 2nd (24:00 CET) if you need a Schengen visa, April 15th (24:00 CET) if you don't

Applications to the camp will close on April 2nd, 2013 for applicants who need a visa to enter the Schengen zone. Tactical Tech is working with partner organisation No Peace Without Justice to help secure Schengen visas for every selected applicant who needs one. It takes 6-8 weeks to process the visas so cannot extend this deadline. People who are nationals of countries that don't need visas to enter Italy have until April 15th, 2013 to apply. Worldwide Applications Open: The Middlebury Fellowships in Environmental Journalism in Vermont

Deadline: 15 May 2013

The Middlebury Fellowships in Environmental Journalism each year take 10 journalists near the start of their careers and help them work through an ambitious reporting project in print, web-based, or radio journalism, from the beginning through publication or broadcast. Fellows meet together twice during the year, once in the fall on the Middlebury campus in Vermont, and once in the spring at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California.

At these meetings professional journalists help participants plan their reporting and shape their stories. Graduate fellows each receive $10,000 to help with reporting and living expenses during the fellowship year—enough, we hope, to let the reporting project be one significant focus of their year’s work. We interpret the environment broadly—reporting projects dealing with economics, culture, global issues, and the like are fine, as long as they center in some way on the human relationship with the physical world.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Interested applicants should write a two- or three-page letter pitching their idea, just as they would to an editor at a magazine or a broadcast program. The letter should demonstrate enough preliminary research to make clear there’s really a story, and that it will be possible for the applicant to successfully report it. The letter should also include a proposed plan of research for the fellowship year. Web and video applications should demonstrate the same focus on reported stories emphasizing context and history as long-fact written pieces.

Applicants should enclose three writing or broadcast samples, preferably of professionally published work, as well as recommendations from two people who have worked with the applicant as an editor or teacher, and a resume with contact information. Resumes, pitches and letters should be written or copied on plain recycled copier or printer weight paper, double-sided if possible, and held together using paper clips rather than staples. Recommendations should be enclosed with the application unless arrangements are made ahead of time, but need not be sealed.

Journalists from outside the United States are encouraged to apply if they can demonstrate proficiency in written English.

DEADLINE:

Applications will be due by May 15, 2013. This is a hard deadline as we try to turn around the applications and choose the fellows no later than early June. Therefore express mail or FedEx applications from within North America should be sent no later than May 11, and as early as necessary from everywhere else. We encourage applicants to use the most dependable carriers possible.

Please use a tracking number if you would like to ensure your materials have been delivered, as we are unable to confirm receipt of individual applications.

Worldwide Applications Open: IRP Global Health Reporting Trip to Zambia

Deadline: 26 April 2013

The International Reporting Project (IRP) is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for our new media reporting trip to Zambia. The fellowship consists of a ten-day reporting trip on July 14-24, 2013 to Zambia, a key southern African country where trip participants will examine and report on progress in combating HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in the country.

The program is open to journalists and new media specialists from all countries. Some priority will be given to participants from the United States and the United Kingdom, but applicants from all nations are eligible. New media journalists include media professionals, bloggers, social media practitioners with large followings, photographers and videographers, new media commentators and freelance contributors.

This trip will focus on the issues of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria in Zambia. Like other sub-Saharan countries, Zambia has made significant progress in addressing these diseases. At a time when global experts are examining the replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to combat these diseases, what happens on the ground in this southern African country is vital to decisions that may influence policymakers and affect future funding for treatment.

Participants on this trip will have an opportunity to visit urban and rural sites, to examine mother-to-child transmission of HIV, the high rates of HIV/TB co-infection, the challenges of drug delivery in rural areas, drug resistance issues, use of bed nets and other low-cost solutions to malaria, malaria during pregnancy. We will also investigate the use of technology in healthcare, and social and environmental factors – for example, gender-based violence and concurrent sexual partnerships – that exacerbate the spread of these diseases.

All candidates must fill out an application form and provide a detailed essay describing the types of stories they might pursue during the Zambia trip. The deadline for applications is April 26.

The IRP would purchase participants’ round-trip air tickets to Zambia, pay for hotel costs, meals and local transportation. Participants would have to obtain their own visas to Zambia, but the IRP will reimburse them for the visa costs. Participants who wish to extend their stay in Zambia after the fellowship have to arrange that at their own expense.

Participants would be asked to be as active as possible in blogging or reporting in any format about the trip. We would encourage blogging during the trip, and afterwards. Multimedia content is encouraged. All of the content produced by the participants on the IRP trip to Zambia would be posted on the IRP site and co-owned by you (or your distribution partners, depending on agreements) and the IRP. Participants would be encouraged to find other media outlets/distribution, including online publications, blogs and web sites for their work.

In addition, the works produced as a result of the trip would be made available for posting on the social media channels of the IRP’s funders. The IRP journalists’ trips are supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

  • Housing in the Cambridge area is expensive. To finalize a rental agreement, it is often required that a person pay their first and last month’s rent, plus a security deposit of one month’s rent. MIT’s International Scholars website has information everyone should read about housing, utilities, and food prices in Cambridge.

Deadline: 5 April 2013

The Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists is now accepting applications from professional journalists from developing countries for its 2013 fellowship program. The application deadline is Friday, April 5, 2013.

The fellowships are available to radio, television, print and web journalists, age 25 to 35, from developing countries who are interested in coming to New York to report on international affairs during the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The fellowships will begin in early September and extend to late November and will include the cost of travel and accommodations in New York, as well as a per diem allowance.

The fellowship program is open to journalists who are native to one of the developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and are currently working full-time for a media organization in a developing nation. Four journalists are selected each year after a review of all applications. Applications Open: The Intajour Fellowship Program 2013- 2014 in Germany (international travel costs, accommodations covered | worldwide)

Deadline: 3 May 2013

The Intajour Fellowship Program consists of a ten-month-long course called 'Journalism in the Digital World' which is comprised of attendance phases as well as e-learning phases. The next fellowship year starts on August 31, 2013. It is a challenging, high-profile program. Please read the program description carefully before applying. The application deadline for the 2013/2014 Fellowship Program is May 3, 2013 (12 noon CEST).

If journalism means collecting, evaluating and publishing information, then this definition also applies in the digital world. Only the conditions under which reporters and editorial staff pursue this activity are changing. Each technical advance opens up new possibilities for research and publishing. To take advantage of these opportunities, journalists must constantly build and update their skills. Sometimes the new journalistic opportunities also require new responses to the question of freedom and responsibility in the media. Journalists will have to adapt to this - and repeatedly because of ever-shorter innovation cycles. Against this background, the International Academy of Journalism is offering the 10-month ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ blended-learning training program. As Intajour Fellows, journalists from around the world are given an opportunity to update their technical skills and discuss current media ethics issues.

SKILLS TAUGHT:

By participating in the ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ program, Fellows acquire skills in the following fields:
  • Investigative research
  • Journalistic forms of presentation on the internet
  • Technical production of web content
  • Filming and editing webvideos
  • Internet security
  • Journalism and ethics: freedom and responsibility in the media
  • Internet politics
ATTENDANCE AND E-LEARNING:

The ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ program is a blended-learning program. It consists of five stages: three attendance phases in Germany and two e-learning phases. During their three study stays in Hamburg, Cologne and Berlin, the Fellows intensively acquire new journalistic skills through lectures, practical group work, discussions and visits to innovative working newsrooms, all supported by the teaching staff. These attendance phases are separated by two e-learning phases during which the Fellows put into practice what they learnt at Intajour and work on journalistic assignments as well as participate in so-called webinars (virtual lectures) in their familiar working and living environment at home. The e-learning phase requires an average time commitment of 7 hours a week. After the end of the course, Intajour remains in close contact with its Fellows through its Alumni services.
  • Stage 1: Start: Attendance phase in Hamburg (3 weeks from 31 August to 21 September 2013)
  • Stage 2: E-learning phase / Fellows study and work in their respective home countries (22 September 2013 to 31 January 2014)
  • Stage 3: Halftime: Attendance phase in Cologne (2 weeks from 1 February to 15 February 2014)
  • Stage 4: E-learning phase / Fellows study and work in their respective home countries (16 February to 25 May 2014)
  • Stage 5: Final: Attendance phase in Berlin (30 May to 8 June 2014)
LECTURERS:

Intajour courses are run by highly specialized lecturers and trainers from Germany and abroad, who have considerable experience with international study groups. Many Intajour lecturers work full-time for publications by Bertelsmann Group's various divisions, e.g. RTL Group, Gruner + Jahr and Random House, while others have a different background. Intajour attaches great importance to the journalistic expertise of lecturers as well as their experience as educators.

COSTS:

Fellows receive a stipend from Intajour towards course fees and international travel costs. During the attendance phases the Fellows are accommodated at Intajour’s expense in guesthouses or hotels and receive an adequate meals allowance.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

The ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ program is aimed at professional journalists from countries where press freedom is restricted or where similar training programs are not available. Applicants are expected to have demonstrated their journalistic talent as a member of an editorial team or as a freelancer.

Applicants should be interested in the new technical opportunities for doing research and publishing on the Internet. An understanding of the role of independent media in democratic societies is a given.

Intajour expects salaried editorial staff to be released for the duration of the attendance phases while continuing to be paid by their employer, and to receive appropriate support from them during the e-learning phases.

Freelance journalists should ensure that during their stay in Germany they are able to pay their ongoing costs in their home country, such as rent and maintenance of dependent family members, from their own financial reserves. Unfortunately, Intajour cannot fund these expenses.

The attendance phases in Germany might require that the Fellows compromise on their traditional diet and daily routine.

Applicants must be in possession of valid international travel documents.

THE SELECTION AND APPLICATION PROCESS:

The application and selection process consists of four steps:
  • First step: Online application form - To apply, please complete the online application form. If you would like to have a look at the form to familiarize yourself with it, you can download a specimen here as a PDF. The deadline is May 3, 2013. Please note that you must fully complete the application form. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Second step: References and additional documents - Intajour reviews the general suitability of the applicant on the basis of the information given and the attached letter of recommendation. Once suitability has been determined, further documents such as work samples and references will be requested for submission by mid May 2013. At the same time, references will be requested from the contact persons provided.
  • Third step: Interview - Promising candidates will then be invited for an interview to be conducted either by the Director of Intajour or by Intajour partners in the candidate’s country or region.
  • Fourth step: Selection - The Intajour Journalism Advisory Council and the Intajour Director will make the final selection of Fellows. The selected journalists will receive a written acceptance letter. Once the selected Fellows have accepted the conditions for participation, the travel documents will be sent to them by post.

For Media Students/ Graduates in Africa: Partnership with Africa Foundation Exchange Programme

Deadline: 1 April 2013

The Partnership with Africa Foundation e.V. (Stiftung Partnerschaft mit Afrika e.V.) is granting a fellowship to students and young professionals from Germany and Southern Africa. It will enable them to take part in a five-week exchange programme to be held in August 2013 in Germany and continued in March 2014 in Namibia.

By organising a five-week exchange programme – which, on the original initiative of the former Federal President Dr. Horst Köhler, is implemented for the seventh time – the Partnership with Africa Foundation e.V. intends to help overcome the lack of knowledge that exists between African reality and German perception and, vice versa, between German reality and African perception. The personal, intercultural encounter between young and upcoming academics and the interdisciplinary exchange are aimed at promoting advanced professional training and at acquiring multipliers for a German-African future that is based on the spirit of partnership.

The fellowship holders are invited to take part in an education programme that will encompass talks with political decision-makers, journalists, academics, and other personalities from civil society and business from both countries. Participants are moreover given the opportunity to take part in political and cultural events and excursions. Thereby, participants contribute towards implementing the programme by assisting in organising lectures and facilitating group discussions. In addition, they will also work on a common study paper focussing on an academic subject. The latter will be prepared during the programme phase in Germany and written between September 2013 and April 2014. As members of a vibrant Alumni network, the participants are moreover highly encouraged to stay involved after the programme by developing and implementing German-African partnership projects.

The programme is directed at students and young graduates from Germany and Southern Africa and will be held in English. Applicants should be between 21 and 28 years old and be studying or have a degree in political science, modern history, international relations, economics, business administration, African studies, cultural studies, media and communication studies, law, or equivalent academic programmes. The number of participants is limited to 24, twelve from Southern African countries and twelve from Germany. Please note that there will be an obligatory preparatory seminar for German participants from 21 to 22 June 2013. A further condition for receiving a grant is that applicants must be able to participate for the entire period. A willingness to take part in an intensive and compact programme schedule as well as continued commitment is expected.

Subject to the granting of funds, all basic programme costs will be covered. However, the Partnership with Africa Foundation e.V. is neither able to cover the German participants’ costs for obtaining visas nor for vaccinations. The acceptance of African participants to the programme only becomes final when the German Embassy in the participant’s home country has issued the relevant visa. It is not possible to legally claim participation in the programme.

Interested individuals are welcome to apply to the Partnership with Africa Foundation e.V. by submitting an essay comprising a maximum of three A4 pages (approx. 6.000 characters) written in English. The essay focusing on one of the two topics outlined below must be accompanied by a letter of motivation comprising no more than one A4 page, a curriculum vitae in tabular form, and a photograph. The following information must be provided: surname, first name, gender, date of birth, profession and/or field of study, place of study, place of work, and place of residence. Applicants are also asked to issue a declaration stating that they wrote the essay without any help from third parties. Direct and indirect citations must be marked and referenced as such and the source must be named. Plagiarism will disqualify an applicant from consideration.

Please e-mail your full application package (essay, letter of motivation, CV incl. photograph) to the Partnership with Africa Foundation e.V. at goafrica@german-african-partnership.org by 1 April 2013.

APPLICATION ESSAY:

In regard to the application essay, you may choose any one of the following topics (Cluster I or II). In each case, all three questions must be answered within your essay.

(I) Consumer Protection and Empowerment

Today, consumers are challenged by increasingly complex amounts of information as well as ever-wider choices of products and services in a globalised market. Yet, there is a growing awareness that empowered consumers are essential in a socially and environmentally sustainable economy. Consumers can play a pivotal role in a wide variety of topics, such as environmental protection, sustainable agriculture, fair trade, labour standards, intellectual property rights, or sustainable financial markets.

Consumer protection policies are traditionally subject to private and public regulation. But recently, consumer education, improved access to information, and the use of market-based mechanisms are increasingly promoted as a means to empower consumers. For example, the European Union’s legislative approach aims to “empower consumers and build their confidence by giving them the tools to participate actively in the market, to make it work for them, to exercise their power of choice and to have their rights properly enforced” (former EU Commissioner John Dalli, 2012). With the South African Consumer Protection Act entering into force in 2011, this approach also gained momentum in Southern Africa. The Southern African Development Community, too, recognised the opportunities involved and notably encouraged its members to safeguard consumer rights.
  • Compare the state of consumer protection and empowerment in Namibia and Germany. Identify and discuss possible explanatory factors for similarities and differences.
  • Food has always been a key issue for consumer protection organisations around the world. In the context of German and Southern African politics, evaluate different means of consumer education in the realm of food, such as labelling and social media advocacy.
  • In the context of consumer protection and empowerment, compare the approach and mandate of both the European Union and the Southern African Development Community. Discuss risks and opportunities of regional economic integration in this regard and justify your assessment.
(II) Social Protection and Basic Rights

Overcoming social inequality is one of the key challenges for societies around the world. Namibia is classified by the World Bank as an upper-middle-income country, yet large parts of its population suffer from social inequality. The country has one of the most unequal income distributions in the world, as Gini-coefficient and HDI levels can attest. Germany, too, is facing rising social inequality as living standards of the poorest households have stagnated, while those of the rich significantly increased. Ongoing debates about a minimum wage, decent pensions, or the persistent growth of a “lower class” in society make this evident.

Both Namibia and Germany are trying to tackle the problem. Thus, the German Basic Law guarantees the fundamental right to a subsistence minimum that is in line with human dignity. According to the Federal Constitutional Court, this obligation – together with the principle of the social welfare state set out in Article 20 of the basic law – assures to each person the material prerequisites indispensable for his or her physical existence and for a minimum of participation in social, cultural and political life. Similarly, respect for human dignity (Article 8) and the possibility for redress of socio-economic disadvantages stemming from past discrimination (Article 23(2)) are deeply seated in the Namibian constitution of 1990. Yet, the “promotion of the welfare of the people” (Article 95) is merely stated as a guiding principle of state policy. The justiciability of economic and social rights within Namibia’s domestic legal system remains an issue of contestation.
  • Compare the state of social and economic inequality within the societies of both Germany and Namibia.
  • Evaluate the approach to guarantee social standards by law. Give examples from both German and Namibian jurisdiction and analyse their efficacy.
  • In 2008, a pilot project to provide basic income grants was started by Namibian non-governmental organisations. Are basic income grants a successful model to counter social inequality? Justify your assessment.

Open to All Nationalities: World Nomads Travel Writing Scholarship 2013

Deadline: 19 April 2013 (2pm)

Keen to turn your passion for writing into a profession? This year we want to send you to Beijing, China!

Crisscrossed by freeways, spiked with high-rises, this vivid metropolis is China at its most dynamic. For a thousand years, the drama of China’s imperial history was played out in Beijing, with the emperor sitting enthroned at the centre of the Chinese universe, and though today the city is a very different one, it remains spiritually and politically the heart of the country.

In this Travel Writing Scholarship, your assignment will be to get under the skin of this city of 22 million, discover the stories of the culture and its people, and write about it all, under the mentorship of two seasoned travel writers.

HERE'S THE DEAL:

First you'll head off to Beijing to go on assignment for five days under the mentorship of Rough Guides writer Martin Zatko to review and update the Beijing chapters of 'The Rough Guide to China'.

Then join international travel journalist and Beijing local, Kit Gillet, for an adventure into his backyard to explore some of the hidden, and not so hidden (camping on the Great Wall anyone?) charms of the city.

All of this writing is sure to work up a pretty serious appetite, so for the last leg of the scholarship, you will spend three days with Hias Gourmet getting well acquainted with the history, art and technique that accompanies the Chinese love of their cuisine.

IMPORTANT DATES:

You need to be available between June 24th - July 6th, 2013 to participate on the assignment.
  • April 19 Submission deadline
  • May 10 Winner confirmed and announced
  • June 24 Arrive in Beijing
  • June 25-29 Writing Assignment with Martin Zatko
  • June 30-July 2 Mentorship & Beijing adventure with Kit Gillet
  • July 3-5 Chinese Food extravaganza
  • July 6 Depart
  • August 9 Copy deadline
YOUR ROUGH GUIDES BRIEF:
  • We'll fly you to Beijing from your country of residence.
  • After spending two days learning the ropes with mentor Martin Zatko, you will have a chance to explore this bustling, progressive city for two days on your own. In this time, you will research, review and update essential travel information for 'The Rough Guide to China', including accommodations, duck restaurants, theatres, teahouses and - best of all - the Forbidden City itself! On your final day, you will meet back up with Martin to go over your work together.
  • Your mentor will be at hand to offer guidance, but essentially this is your assignment; you will travel on your own for this part of the journey so you must be comfortable travelling solo. Martin will assign you a specific area based on your travel experience.
  • Your work will feature in the new edition of 'The Rough Guide to China', placing your foot firmly in the door of the elusive travel writing industry!
THROUGH LOCAL EYES

For your second mentorship experience in Beijing, you will spend three days with Kit Gillet, learning what life is like as a freelance journalist and discovering Beijing through his local perspective.

First, you’ll spend a night camping near (or actually on!) the Great Wall of China, to experience this wonder of the world firsthand – and without the crowds.

You will also spend time among the hutong alleyways that formed the ancient heart of the Chinese capital. Wander around the courtyards that still dominate the northern part of central Beijing, talking to locals and seeing the modern developments - restaurants, bars, micro breweries - that are turning some of the areas into chic city destinations for foreign tourists.

Finally, you will visit the artist commune of Songzhuang and galleries of Caochangdi to see the burgeoning Chinese art scene to find out how Chinese artists work and what inspires them.

FOOD AND CULTURE:

Nowhere else on the Chinese mainland can compete with the culinary wealth of Beijing: every style of Chinese food is available, plus just about any Asian and most world cuisines. Among all this abundance it’s sometimes easy to forget that Beijing has its own culinary traditions; Beijing duck (Beijing kaoya) and Mongolian hotpot are definitely worth trying!

For the final leg of your trip, our friends at Hias Gourmet want to give you a window into this rich food culture by offering up three culinary experiences of your choice. Go on a tea tasting safari, a night market excursion, a breakfast tour of the Sihuan market or noodle and dumpling making classes.

You'll also have some free time during this leg of the trip to explore Beijing and dig up some independent stories.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO PRODUCE:

Along with your work on 'The Rough Guide to China', you will be required to keep a daily travel journal on WorldNomads.com (no less than 200 words per daily entry), as well as produce three pieces to be published on World Nomads sharing your adventures in Beijing.

WHO CAN APPLY:
  • This opportunity is open to students, emerging and non-professional writers and lovers of travel looking for a career change.
  • The scholarship is open to all nationalities, however, you must have an exceptionally high degree of proficiency in written English.
  • The opportunity is designed to give you a taste of what it's like to be a travel writer on the road, so you must be comfortable doing some travel on your own.

Call for Applications: 2013 FAIR African Investigative Journalism Grants Fund (Africa-wide)

Deadline: 27 February 2013

FAIR is pleased to announce that investigative journalists working for African media and residing in Africa can apply for a small grant under the 2013 ‘African Investigative Journalism Grants Fund’.

Supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the objective is to strengthen media environments in Africa to act as a watchdog over actions of governments and vested-interested groups.

The grant programme covers 40 small grants of US$ 1,000 each which are meant for expenses only. An advisory committee will extend these grants to deserving journalists who cannot find time and resources to follow up on an important story.

FAIR thanks SIDA for the generous funding of these grants, which are not linked to any specific subject or theme. Deadline for applications: 27 February 2013

Email applications can be sent to: grants@fairreporters.org

GRANTS AMOUNT AND PURPOSE:

The FAIR investigative grants support investigative story or programme projects that are proposed by journalists working (either full time or free lance) for African media houses, and for which an expense budget is required.

The investigative journalism projects submitted need to match criteria set below. The grants cover expenses to be incurred in an investigative story or programme project only and are not to be used for fees.

Applications to the fund need to be accompanied by an expense budget. The FAIR Advisory Council will adjudicate each application on its merits and FAIR will announce the winning applicants in personal correspondence and on its website.

Neither the FAIR Board, which administrates the grants, nor the fund donor organisation, will have a say in the adjudication process: the adjudication is the sole prerogative of the FAIR Advisory Council. As the adjudication process is out of the hands of FAIR and its controlling structures, any FAIR member is entitled to apply for a grant as well as any non-FAIR member.

GRANTS ADVERTISING:

The invite for applications for the grants will be offered for attention to the websites and, if any, to the hard copy publications of as many as possible of the journalism (support) organisations that are engaged in the development and advancement of journalism in Africa, particularly sub-Saharan Africa. They will be advertized on the FAIR website and on the FAIR listserve. FAIR members will be encouraged to announce the invite in the publications of the media houses they work for, as well as on the websites they run, or have connections with, in their countries in Africa. The announcement will also specifically be communicated to FAIR funders and partners, for the purpose of wider communication by these funders and partners within their African media contact circles.

LANGUAGE:

Applications may be submitted in English, French or Portuguese. Where FAIR takes the initiative to correspond with any grantee, this correspondence will also take place in the language of the applicant.

APPLICATIONS RULES:

Applications must be accompanied by a 1 page summary in either English, French or Portuguese. The summary is of extreme importance because the initial shortlist of applications will be compiled on the basis of the summary and only the applications that make the shortlist will be considered in full.

The summary should contain the following:
  • Subject
  • Reason why this subject was chosen
  • Envisaged methodology (source-building, data to access, testing of obtained info in order to reach conclusion)
  • Media house that has undertaken to publish (the acceptance letter from the editor is to be attached)
  • A paragraph about earlier publications by the journalist
  • Budget (expenses only)
If an investigation topic is of such a sensitive nature that the applicant does not want the topic to be known to others, he/she should state this in the application. In this event, the applicant and the advisory council will come to an agreement on a suitably neutral/general description of the nature of the investigation, which description will be used when the award is announced.

Call for Applications: 2013 IJP Middle East Fellowship (€4,000 stipend | Egypt)

Deadline: 30 June 2013

In 2013 the IJP are offering for the tenth time a travel and work fellowship for up to five young journalists from the Middle East, especially from Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Palestine to spend a two-month period in Germany. We are doing this in cooperation with governmental institutions, foundations and sponsors in Germany and the Middle East. At the same time, the fellowship is being offered to journalists in Germany, who can apply to spend a two-month period in the Middle East.

The two work fellowships each for journalists from Germany and Israel are named in honour of the journalist Ernst Cramer and the former mayor of Jerusalem Teddy Kollek and their exemplary dedication to the intensification of German-Israeli relations.

The fellowship is intended to enable young journalists to familiarise themselves with the political issues in Germany at an early stage of their career. This will raise awareness of aspects of relations between Germany and the Middle Eastern region in future multipliers and will give them a personal insight into mentality, culture and everyday life in Germany and the European Union.

The practical part of the fellowship ensures contact with colleagues in the region, and it is hoped this contact will be maintained in future years. This is also the intention of future alumni reunions in Berlin.

MODE OF PAYMENT: The fellowship carries a single payment of 4,000 euro per person. This sum is intended to cover a large proportion of the travel costs, board and lodging. Fellows are expected to contribute a certain amount themselves. There will be no payment for the individual’s work on location as a journalist.

DATES: The fellowship begins end of October 2013 with an introductory event in Berlin together with the German fellows. This is followed by a fellowship lasting at least two months with a German media outlet.

The branch of the media (newspaper, radio, TV, magazine) will be selected by the fellows, and the actual place of work will then be decided by the organiser in consultation with the fellows. There will be the possibility to extend the stay on an individual basis.

APPLICATION:

Applications, for which there is no special form, are to be submitted by June 30, 2013. The application must be accompanied by a passport photo, a detailed curriculum vitae, and a journalistic appraisal written by the head of department or editor-in-chief. The latter should support the application, guarantee temporary leave of absence for the duration of the fellowship, and serve as evidence of journalistic activity. Samples of work may be enclosed. A very good knowledge of English is expected. While a knowledge of German will naturally be welcomed, this is not an essential requirement for an application. Visa arrangements will be made with the help of the organizers.

After preliminary selection, the finalists might be invited for a selection interview. Legal action in respect of the final decision shall be barred. Notification will be sent to the successful candidates by August 25th.

All fellows undertake to write, upon their return, a report of at least three pages on their experience, activities and impressions in the country.
