Lecture by Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer: How have Our Writers Influenced Change in the Minds of South Africans?

To celebrate a century of writing and literary intellectuals’ influence on the liberation struggle & political impact on literary discourse & developments, the wRite associates will host a lecture by Nobel Laureate, Nadine Gordimer, titled “How Have Our Writers Influenced Change In The Minds Of South Africans?” on 31st July 2012, at the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The event is part of the programme of events that will lead up to the inaugural Africa Century International African Writers Conference taking place from 7th – 10th November 2012 at University of the Free State.

The Africa Century International African Writers Conference coincides with the 21st anniversary of the International African Writers’ Day; which was declared in 1991 by the Organisation of African Unity to “afford the African people a moment of pause within which to reflect on the contribution of African Writers to the development of the Continent”.

The first lecture in the series was delivered by ANC National Chairperson, Ms Baleka Mbete (read on her behalf by Mr. Themba Wakashe, CEO of ANC Centenary National Task Team) and second by Prof. Mbulelo Mzamane, a well renowned author, scholar, academic and activist. Dr Nadine Gordimer is the third literary luminary to feature on the lecture series programme is also a patron of The Africa Century International African Writers Conference.

“We are excited that The Africa Century International African Writers Conference has secured patronage from the first and only woman Nobel Prize for Literature winner on the African continent, Dr Gordimer,” says Programme Director Morakabe “Raks” Seakhoa.

“It is crucial for African intellectuals to continue the robust discourse around the continent’s future and the fundamental role of the written word in social development, we need to hear their voices in mapping our the African continent’s future.” He concludes.
